Any fans of vension?

I was given a few pounds and was going to make some chili, for a get together.

Do I tell people my guests, or just let them think it's beef?

Eek, you'd better tell them. What if someone eats it, and goes home later and then finds out? They may barf or something, and then be really mad at you!

I'd be really upset if I found out I ate venison accidentally. That's kind of like giving a vegetarian a meat product and not telling them!

I don't eat any kind of wild game but I've had venison before (when I was a child) and I remember it being chewy. Ick.

of beef in the last six years. We get deer every year and also moose the last three tries. I do not even remember to tell people that I made my meal with critter. My husband made almost 8 quarts of chili for his works Christmas Party and no one said boooooooo except this is delicious.....

My dh is an avid hunter and we have had deer in our freezer almost every year.

I can tell the difference between beef and deer. DH made a chili with the deer and did not tell me thinking I wouldn't know. I knew! I am not a fan of it at all.

My dd on the other rather eat deer meat than hamburg!

We use venison 99.9% of the time at my home, but if i'm cooking for guests or taking something to a pot-luck, I always use beef.

But if you invite me to your party, I'll eat the venison chili!! :p

I did hear that there was some sort of disease like mad cow affecting deer. The only thing worse than deer meat is tainted deer meat. *insert vomit smiley here*

::yes::

Yum, venison chilli! Used to love that stuff, but had to cut back - I don't want to get fat!

I've heard that venison chili comes out very well if you cook it in a crockpot.

Haven't tried it myself, though. I've never had deer meat before, and I'm at a point in my life where if I haven't eaten an animal yet, I'm not going to try it ever.

I'm with JerseyJanice..I've gone this long without eating venison, I think can I can go a little bit longer without it.

Game meat don't apeals to me because they are well, gamey :hyper:

Maybe if it was in chili it wouldn't be that bad?

Nah, I still don't want it

We love venison in our family. It's very tasty and it actually has 1/2 the fat and calories of beef/

I would for sure tell your guests that it is venison. I remember when I was pregnant with my DS. I was very picky about what I ate....or I would get ill. We were at the in-laws for a get together and they made chili. Right before I took the first bite DH just happen to ask if there was venison in it......and there was. We both just had bread for dinner.

I'm sure Snoopy will be glad you posted that, Jet Mom.

See, Judi, you can enjoy venison without worrying about the fat. Just refrain from eating it in a bread bowl, and you'll be fine. :)

Ick, eating it in a bread bowl -- I like to eat, but not that much! Something just really wrong about that thought.

Wonder if chili is o.k. for the South Beach diet? We have guests coming over soon, and perhaps I could serve chili? Without the bread bowl, of course.

MMM!!! sounds yummy. We usually have two pots (one beef and one deer) and try to make people at least try the venison. It is very tasty if cooked well.

My Aunt makes a venison sauerbraten that is to die for ::yes::

We were talking about what we would and would not eat at work not long ago, and I told the girls I won't eat bambi or thumper! I've gone this long without ever trying it, why start now?

One particular nurse's husband is a Marine and said that his friend was so hungry (they were in the jungle or something for an extended period of time and were half starved--don't remember all the exact details) and said he watched him kill and eat raw monkey meat! (insert puking smilie here!)

I guess you'll kill and eat anything if you're hungry enough! Even raw monkey!

I would tell your guests, or not make it with venison. Unless you know everyone would be alright with it. There are a lot of people out there that are closet animal rights supporters. Some would get down right upset if they found out their chilli had a "poor deer" in it. Now me on the other hand, give me another bowl please. The gamey taste in wild game depends on what they eat. I've had some that was almost to wild, and others that you could almost cut with a fork and tasted great. In fact a freind and me had a cookout and we both brought some deer meat. Mine was from Nevada and his from Arizona. Mine got all eaten up, and he had lots left over.

I miss having Venison around. My Dad used to hunt and provide us with plenty each year (he has since passed away) - but it really does depend on where the deer come from. Most of the venison I've had has been from farming areas, corn fed deer are very mild in taste.

My first reaction would be yes, to mention it. But then I have to confess, one time I had to make BBQ meatballs for a party and I discovered I didn't have as much ground beef as I thought, so I mixed in about 25% venison and never mentioned it.

Everyone loved them.

Um....that would be me, although I have one foot in and one foot out of the closet! ::yes::

I always cook with venison, and honestly it never crosses my mind to tell people. Everyone always loves my chili, spaghetti, casseroles, and you get the picture.:wave2:
