Venice Surcharges

Stating next year to get into Venice you'll need to pay a surcharge of three to ten Euros. Why? Because that fine city is being trodden to the ground by luxury cruse liners. When I was last there there were three of these... you can understand why, given the age of the place!

My family is seriously considering an Italy trip next year and we're thinking of skipping Venice. Not because of the fee, but because we'd rather go to other parts of the country. My sister went there once and said it was "meh" and a little overrated.

I've been before and consider it to be one of the - or most - beautiful place I've seen.

Just don't go in the winter. Cold, wet, flooded, miserable.

I'm with you, there. It reminded me of an old has-been actress who dresses up in her old finery, drinks at the bar, and talks about how she "used to be somebody". The canals were gross-oily and full of trash. Maybe they're more romantic at night?

I'd pick Sorrento instead, every day of the week. Lush with bougainvillea and perfumed with lemon groves. An added bonus for us was, on the ferry back from Capri, we saw a guy and his suitcase fall off the ferry gangplank. I couldn't stop laughing--I'm immature like that!

not my experience at all

I may be besotted with Vencie, but I STILL don't know the full story. I haven't seen the rest of Italy. Milan, Rome. Verona. Pisa, Florence. All meant to be amazing in their own way.

Winter would be the only time I would consider going. Sitting outside when it is 50 degrees would be heaven compared to the heat and stench of sitting outside on a 100 degree day in July.

I suppose both are true. I have visited both in the Winter and Summer. The Winter is miserable :( But then again, 100°F heat IS pretty nasty. I'm going in a week or so. Hopefully the temperature will be a pleasant medium.

It more than cruise ships, it's tourist in general. This was actually announced a few years ago and they are not the only place to implement this.

Not only a surcharge, but the big ships have to dock away from the Grand Canal. (That isn't new.) https://www.cruisetradenews.com/large-cruise-ships-banned-venice-grand-canal/

We were in Venice nearly four years ago when the city was flooded, so while we enjoyed the rain, there wasn't much to do. Our romantic gondola ride at sunset was canceled, and the tour of the Doges palace as well. Not in any hurry for a do-over.
