Hello,
I am a vegetarian and a Disney veteran. I define my vegetarianism as not consuming anything that is the result of an animal's death. So something with honey ok, something with chicken stock not OK. Anyway- I was recently dismayed to find out that the huge cupcakes at Starring roles have a lard-based frosting.
Are there any sources of information as to what odd items (like cupcakes) aren't really vegetarian - friendly? For example - Zebra domes contain gelatin.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :thumbsup2

My advice to you is to post in the disabilities forum. There many experts with food allergies, preferences have advice on everything you need to know.

Lard? Oh, gross! I read somewhere that the vegetable lo mein in China has chicken broth, but that's the only one I've heard of.

Where did you get the info that the frosting is lard-based?

Also, I've seen home-based recipes for the zebra domes that include gelatin, but I've never seen someone that got confirmation from the chef that they do...has anyone ever gotten that direct confirmation?

I should mention that I'm not doubting, I just want to know. :)

I got confirmation from the baker at Boardwalk Bakery that their chocolate mousse cake is made with gelatin (lousy cheating lazy way of making mousse), as was their key lime pie... (and the brownie I got as a consolation was really bad)

Bicker-
Thank you for all those links! I've been searching various threads for quite some time, and was wishing for a central place with several links. You just gave it to me :thumbsup2

Where did you find out the cupcakes had lard in the frosting? That's gross if it's true as I'm a vegtarian and have eaten the choco. peanutbutter one, I just assumed it was vegetable based for the fat.

I've heard that the china does use chicken stock, but if you ask the cm's at the quick serve they say they don't, I haven't eaten there cause I get leary but they should have an ingredient list at all CS places to check items.

There was a thread where this came up at the end of last year and the general concensus was that it is not likely to be lard, but rather vegetable shortening on the basis that lard turns rancid too quickly in the heat.

The best way to check is by asking for The Book at a CS restaurant. They all have them and guests dealing with allergies use this as a double checking reference for ingredients.

If you really want non-animal baked goods, go to the new Babycakes NYC at Downtown Disney. It's part of the new Pollo Campero and Fresh Apeel area (that replaced McDonald's).

They are a vegan bakery, and I hear good things about their product.

We tried babycakes. Big ol' thumbs DOWN from the 3 of us. Even my 6 year old threw 3/4 of his cupcake away...so did the grownups. Huge waste of money for us. :(

Thanks everyone for all the great links and other advice. I read that the cupcakes had lard frosting on the Disney Food Blog. I think I also heard it in a podcast, but I cannot remember which one (sorry, I listen to a bunch of them).
