DH and I are going to Vegas for 1 week next month. This is our first time going. We like to gamble but friends that are going (also their 1st time) do not. We are staying at different hotels. Tropicana and Caesar's. We will be at The M at the end of the week
We usually go to WDW in Aug from open to close. I assume that Vegas will be similar heat.
Is the Strip walkable? We were thinking about renting a car. DH wants to go to the History Channel shows and probably old Vegas .
We purchase a bus tour to the Grand Canyon from Groupon. The Beatles show is the only other must do. What's the best place for discounts?
I'm looking for suggestions for things to fill our day. We will probably gamble some the first few days but more towards that end of the week since they're not staying as many days as we are. It will be h
Places to eat? We have comps for each day at the Tropicana as well and comps from our play at our locals that can be use there and The M as well as some for any Total Rewards property. Any must do or must stay away from?
We have 4 show tickets (2 for 2 different shows) for anything at Tropicana.

We welcome any advice and suggestions.

My only fear is that I will get vasculitis rash on my legs. I got it for the first time on our last WDW trip. It looked HORRIBLE and was painful! Last year I got a very mild case at DL but we were only there 2 days, not a week

Thanks!

We love the Hoover Damn, Mt Charleston. We went in May one year and it was hot we hung out in the pool during the day Emeril's Fish house in MGM is a must do for us.

Discounts: Tickets2Nite, booths/stores various locations, also online
Heat: very hot, dry heat
Driving: best to use back roads
Parking: just read yesterday that a number of casinos are starting to charge for parking
Walking: The Strip is 3.5 miles, so very walkable - but oh, that heat! Good news, you can walk The Strip with open beverages.
Dining: if you're hungry, try Hash House-a-Go-Go. The original is a ways down West Sahara (across from a Car Max), but now there's one in what used to be Imperial Palace.

The DIS has a Las Vegas dedicated forum under Disneyland and the West

If I were you I'd spend some time on the Trip Advisor Las Vegas forum and familiarize yourself. Vegas is no longer the home of cheap eats and cheap shows, so a little knowledge will go a long way. All MGM and CET properties on the strip now charge for parking. Unless you have somewhere you really, really decide you want to get to by car, I'd consider using Uber/Lyft if you just need a ride -- or rent a car for a day to do off strip activities.

If by History Channel stuff you mean Pawn Stars, etc., I'd take a good look on the TA Forums regarding that. I don't watch the shows, but honestly the feedback on the forums doesn't make me think I've missed a lot.

The deals offered by Cirque on their shows is said to be just as good online as what is offered at Tix4Tonight booths. If buying your tickets at the booth, remember the 40% discount is off the highest price tickets only. You also then have to take your voucher from the booth to the box office to redeem for the actual tickets. Love is very popular. If you know you want to go, know the night you want to go, buy online at the Mirage website & save yourself time and $$. You can find some discussion online about the seating for Love. IMO not many bad seats, so don't feel compelled to buy the most expensive options.

Travelzoo & vegas4locals offer some good Vegas Deals. legitimate ones.

The Peppermill restaurant is a Vegas classic with good prices just a bit north of Wynn/Encore & the heart of the strip. Great for breakfast, lunch or even dinner -- their Fireside Lounge is famous also. Worth an Uber to enjoy.

Charlie Palmer Cut of the Week, $48 per person, includes wine pairings is considered one of the better deals on strip.

Travelzoo or Groupon offers a great deal for BLT Steak at Bally's for $115 for two that gets rave reviews. Haven't tried it myself yet, but will be doing so next trip.

Skyfall Lounge at the Delano for cocktails at sunset is a fabulous experience I would not miss.

Happy hour deals are quite plentiful and a great suggestion for drinks/apps -- many places offer them early evening and then again at around 10 in the evening. Great alternative for a big dinner, especially in the heat. You can find loads of happy hour info on the TA Vegas forums.

Grand Luxe cafes at both Venetian and Palazzo are decent more affordable meal options, and I believe both are open 24 hours, so could work for a late dinner after Love performance. Note, Vegas may be a 24-hour town, however most nicer restaurants are not seating much later than 10 p.m. Plan accordingly for nights you plan to see a show.

Buy yourselves some bottled water at Walgreen's or CVS right on the strip, keep in your room & always take a bottle out with you. Much cheaper, as well as keeping hydrated. Bring lip balm, the dry air is hard on lips and skin.

Vegas is much different than WDW heat wise. Think of it as being in the sauna vs the steam room. I'd take Vegas in june (have been then 3 times) over WDW any day.

You can definitely walk the strip - have done it mid day in mid june. Lots of places have mister out that help cool the air but don't get you wet.

I've jogged the strip in june and wasn't sweaty at the end since it evaporated.

Enjoy, be prepared for very cold pool water. I think they float ice blocks in it at night.

If you like Earl of Sandwich there is one in the Planet Hollywood.
It gets very hot in Vegas, but can get cool inside the hotels.
One of the hotels I really like is the Bellagio, they have the conservatory which is picture worthy, and just around the corner in there is huge chocolate fountain I always take pictures and a bakery attached. So yummy.

So much shopping, including the Fashion mall. They have a lot of new things as well. I cant wait to go and see all the new stuff. There is the Coca Cola store, and the M&M store.
I loved the Wicked Spoon buffet but it was expensive. We also like the Rio buffet as well. The heat is dry heat. If you have a car there is the Pinball museum, downtown is the Mob museum. I like that kind of stuff.

We like to use the Monorail system to get up and down the strip. It runs behind the hotels on one side of the street, so it's not always the most picturesque ride. All hotels don't have Monorail stations, so you basically get off, visit several on both sides of the street, and hop back on. We enjoy just going up and down the strip, walking through each casino, looking at the various attractions, some of which are free. We look through the malls, play a few penny slots here and there, find interesting restaurants, etc. We're not big drinkers, but we try to get one "adult slurpee" along the way. We took our teen boys to Blue Man Group a few years ago, which we all loved. We also took a bus tour to Hoover Dam which is very interesting. We were there over fourth of July and the temps got as high as 109 degrees. It's a very dry heat and when it's windy, it feel like a furnace blowing in your face. The difference between Vegas and WDW is that the sun, not the humidity, is the major offender. You can get some relief by going into the shade. At WDW in the summer, I'm equally miserable in the sun or shade.

Here are my thoughts.....I've been 6 times.

Do not do Tropicana....either stay the whole time at Caesar's or go with MGM or Monte Carlo, Mirage or any of the other "big casinos".
Rent a car.....we've only gone in June and it's very very hot. Pools are great, tho this time of year! Or ride the Deuce if it's still around. Or the monorail behind MGM.

Have fun!!

We're staying at Caesar's but our friends are staying at the Tropicana. We got comps for a free room, free play and good based on our play at our local casino so we booked it but they will stay there. They were planning to stay there and use their Hilton points before we received the comp. Is it really bad?

This! Also duck into casino's if walking the strip-many will interconnect. Beware of drinking alcohol in the heat.
We got a great deal for a brazilian steak house one year we went. Ended up starting with Happy hour in the bar and met some locals who gave us the scoop on best places to eat (one casino has since been knocked down).

The high roller is really good, if you a drinker go with the high roller happy hour
This is soooo much fun! Last time we went they were just starting to do this (and were offering really great specials). Great way to see the strip from on top. Also the roller coaster at New York New York is touristy but fun. Make sure to walk through conservatory (back of Bellagio), and see the fountain show at night. Don't stop to take cards from the people who click cards to get your attention-they are for escort services. If you are a thrill seeker the rides at top of Stratosphere are fun (and terrifying)

Ditto what cabinafrau said about the TripAdvisor forums! Tons of info from helpful people!
Have fun! Bit jealous as it has been 3 years since we've been back (love Las Vegas-so much to do and see that isn't just gambling)

anyone who goes to Vegas with out bringing me to show them how to have fun is making a huge mistake

If it's your first time going to Vegas, I'd recommend putting the effort to walk down the Strip. Yes it will be hot and yes there will be lots of tourists, but since it's your first time, you really should get the immersive experience by walking it. Nothing like it.

Since you have a medical condition, play it smart, rent a car & drive during the day. It could be 100 degrees when you are there.

If you want to do a bit of strip walking, go at night, when the lights are blinking in all their glory and it is "cooler" (<-pun LOL).

Happy planning!

Actually Tropicana was renovated not too long ago and isn't bad by any means. It doesn't get a lot of online love because it's at one end of the strip, isn't part of the MGM or CET machine, doesn't have a huge selection of restaurants and doesn't have any of the hottest entertainment. It's changed hands a few times over the past several years as well. It is known to have a nice pool area. Absolutely more than worth it for the free room and free play and I suspect they will be quite comfortable there. It may not be absolutely the most convenient for everything, but I would have zero hesitation to stay there.

ETA There are many videos of Vegas hotel rooms online if you check YouTube. I'd imagine it might be slimmer pickings for the Trop, but I'm betting you will find some if you take a look to ease your mind.

I also recommend avoiding Monte Carlo until at least next year. It is undergoing an extensive renovation, the point that it will no longer operate as Monte Carlo, becoming the Park. Discounts to stay are plentiful because of the noise level, the lack of usual restaurants and the fact you have to go down and across Las Vegas Boulevard to the MGM to use a pool because that entire wing of the resort and the pool area are currently down to dirt as of a few weeks ago.

The monorail behind the east side of the strip may be useful to getting back and forth between CP and the Trop. Leaving CP I would cross LVB and board at the Flamingo station and ride down to MGM, cut through MGM to the strip and cross Tropicana Blvd to the Trop. Car rental in Vegas is a lot more expensive now that you're likely paying $25 a day to park, plus parking fees at most of the resorts if you drive back and forth. You can probably get from one strip destination to another for $6 - $8 with Uber and Lyft when monorail or walking is too much. Seek out discount codes for Uber and Lyft before your trip as well.

My husband and I stayed at the Tropicana last month and we really liked it! If you can, try for the casino tower or else its a LONG walk to the other tower.

First, have fun! Are you a foodie? There are some amazing restaurants - Craft, Le Circue, Joel Rubuchon, but that's just of my favorite repeats.

Here's what Vegas does well in the summer - DAY. LIFE. ULTRA. POOLS. - Wet Republic, Rehab, Encore's Beach Club (super different from WDW's! - and my favorite). I'm too old to stay up partying, its easier during the day.
