Vegas Hotel

Bill's Gamblin' Hall and Saloon is mid-Strip and is clean and decent. How fancy a room are you looking for?

I've stayed at a couple places in Vegas:

The Mirage is my favorite. Location is fantastic, love the large rooms and comfie beds, crowds are managable even though the place is massive. Good food (ummm, BLT Burgers), though it's all expensive. Everything's always very upbeat at the Mirage, and it's full of beautiful people. We loved the dolphin/tiger exhibit (had free tickets), but we wouldn't have paid for it. Negative: I was there in July, and it was 117 degrees. We literally couldn't find a single chair at the pool. As I said, it's my favorite; however, I wouldn't stay there unless I had a good deal -- in the long run, it's just a place to sleep for one night, and it isn't worth hundreds/night.

The Renaissance is just okay -- we won it on Priceline, and paid only $50. It's too far away from everything, and though you can walk to the monorail, it is rather expensive. Still, the rooms were nice, as was the pool. They do charge for parking, which is odd in Vegas and even more odd for their remote location. No restaurant, just a counter that sells breakfast foods. I have no complaints whatsoever about the room, but I wouldn't choose this location again, even at the low price.

The Plaza -- yes, the Plaza, the old dumpy Plaza in Downtown Vegas. I DO recommend it. I paid $35/night, and at that price point one can overlook a few negatives. We chose it because we were flying in late, then leaving early in the morning (an obvious evening to choose cheap), but it grew on us. It looked exactly like the hotels of my 1960s/70s childhood: clean, but completely lacking in style. We had two clean, comfortable beds with lackluster brown bedspreads. The pool was pathetic, but we didn't plan to swim on that trip. The location -- amazingly -- was great. We were right across the street from the Freemont Street Experience, and we loved it. It was much smaller than The Strip, of course, but still full of life. Live bands, lights, it was fun. We ate at Tony Rama's and had a blast at some of the casinos. Hennessey's Tavern is right there for a great breakfast. The Plaza's casino is not so flashy as the Strip casinos, but they have all the same games, and they sell margaritas for $2 (the Mirage charges $15). I'd stay there again! You can always take The Deuce bus down to the strip, and you can gamble and see some great shows with your savings!

The first place I ever stayed in Vegas was the Riviera. It's a dump, yet it's not all that cheap. Boasting neither great location, nor great price, nor unique decore, nor wonderful pool or any other outstanding feature, I see no reason to stay there again.
