Various RCI questions

Thanks, I'll probably call that week too. But I can't take the chance of waiting that long to make sure we're on the first floor or have an elevator because my MIL won't be able to do stairs. I need to make sure that requirement is on the reservation.
Make your requests through the exchange department at DVC MS.

This is exactly the request we used when DH had knee surgery and was using a scooter on our trip. We were placed in bldg 62 - first floor. All in all just perfect. OKW is large enough that even if they miss the request they should be able to find an appropriate first floor room but I'd guess they are very conciencious about it b/c of the few elevators. And the bonus with bldg 62 was that it had the seperate entrance to the bathroom although with our group setup it wasn't required.
As inconsistent as they are with requests in general, they have always been VERY good with these type of medical requests. The problems arise when people are too greedy and too demanding such as insisting on a first floor but not a HC unit.

Actually, for this trip I wouldn't mind a HC unit. But I'd never request one because I know there are others who really do need it. We'll give our inlaws the master bedroom so they have the walk in shower and that should be good enough for my MIL

DVC, like many timeshares, often have more HC rooms than needed. Taking one from someone isn't an issue really, what has been an issue with DVC is too many and people getting them that didn't want them. Certainly some people need them and it's important for that reason. As a rule I'd rather not travel than have one but at the same time I realize that they are no extra rooms and someone has to have a HC room at times even if they don't need them. Thus you'll see my only request is often NOT a HC room now that smoking isn't an issue. If we have multiple units, that they be close together. IF I got one I'd check to see if they had something else but I would not complain about getting one for the reasons I mentioned above, just like someone has to have the dumpster view at VWL. Interestingly right now we do need one with my wife's recent injury and being non weight bearing for at least 10 weeks and another 4-6 weeks in a fracture boot after that with weight bearing. We actually just got back from a 9 night trip with 2 nights at Summer Bay Resort (192 & 27) and a week at Marriott's Crystal Shores (Marco Island). We asked and received a HC unit at both resorts.

I added the info as a second paragraph because it fit in but wasn't directed to your situation, just trying to be more complete. I hope it didn't come across in a negative way.

So how was Crystal Shores? We saw them during the early sales and thought they looked very nice.

Nice but different, it'll be better once it's completed.

I saw this morning that there was a one bedroom available at AKV for next March so we grabbed it using my inlaws RCI points. RCI told me to call the resort to find out what type of one bedroom it would be. The resort sent me to DVC. DVC told me they don't assign the rooms until the week before arrival and I should call then to know what my view was going to be. She WAS able to tell me that all RCI reservations are put into Kidani so I know the building, but not the view. I"m hoping for savanna view, of course.

I"m thinking now that I won't be able to get the medical request for first floor at Old Key West until a week before by calling the resort for that, too.

You should at least be able to make requests through DVC. Talk to another person and see what they say. You should be able to make medical requests at a minimum.

I've been on the phone most of the day between RCI and DVC! What a pain.

Where we are at is I have the DVC reservation number for the Dec stay with all the inlaws. I was able to request the "no stairs" location and also asked for a 2 bedroom with access to the bathroom from the main area. The CM told me these were't guaranteed requests. I was also able to add the ME info to the reservation so I think that one is set for now.

The RCI reservation I made for AKV next March isn't in the DVC system yet. Once it is, it should be easier to work with as I paid the $59 RCI gift fee so the reservation is in my name. All I need is the DVC corresponding number and then I can also make room requests.

I especially needed the DVC reservation numbers because I want to do 180 + 10 day dining reservations!

They should be able to tell you what room TYPE it is a few days after the exchange, for today, likely either Fri or Tues. You should be able to make a request at that time for the new exchange. They won't be able to tell you the unit or unit location until check in and even then only when the room is ready.

It is type 49 but DVC says that doesn't mean anything. I know it is a 1 bedroom in Kidani but they said they can't tell me view until a week before. Do you mean they should be able to tell me if it is savanna view or not on Fri or Tues? I don't care which unit, just want to know if I get to see animals or something else like the pool.

Once they get the listing back from RCI with your name on it (usually about twice a week), they can tell you the unit type and building for AKV. For Kidani it's most likely a standard view but it's possible it's a Savannah view. Give them a few days, maybe to next Tues, then call back and talk to the exchange department. Ask them specific questions such as the building and unit type but not view or specific location. If they balk, tell them you're trying to decide whether to keep it or give it back to RCI based on the info. Until they get the listing back from RCI, they really have no info to give you. In addition, RCI often has enough info that you can figure it out as well for weeks exchanges but it appears not for points exchanges in.

There's still a chance it could be Jambo? The DVC CM who was supposed to be the RCI expert told me that all RCI reservations are booked to Kidani. And is there such a thing as "giving it back to RCI"?

I was speaking more to general terms. IF they told you they're only giving RCI Kidani villas, that's likely true, and c/w my suspicions but with no other info to back it up. However, you won't know for certain until you get the real info. I know last fall when I had 2 units, they couldn't tell me if the second was Kidani or Jambo. Since I already had a Kidani 1 BR savannah view which I knew the specifics of already, I wanted to make sure the second was in the same building. RCI ended up giving me a few days until DVC could tell me so I could cancel in case it was a separate building.

One other issue is that, unlike II, apparently we as members can use our points and formally link with an RCI reservation. So if you wanted to extend a day or 2, it would be easier and simpler now than preiviously if what I was told is correct.

Okay, then I think I understand that I am stuck with whatever the room is at Kidani whether it ends up being savanna view or standard. I can't change my mind on it if it turns out to be standard view and not savanna?

I was able to get the DVC reservation number for the 2 bedroom villa booked at OKW in December so I would think that it would be easy enough to link reservations just like any othertwo DVC reservations. We don't have to do that though since in Dec we will leave OKW to go to Kidani for a couple nights and in March, we will leave Kidani to go to Jambo concierge for a couple nights. We'll be switching rooms in any case.

As Dean mentioned, this is not true. Once your reservation is transferred to DVC, the view will be known (and fixed). You should be able to just ask the MS rep whether it is Standard or Savannah, and they should be able to tell you.

You can cancel the exchange, subject to the cancellation rules for Points reservations. I think you'd lose the exchange fee, but maybe not the GC fee, and you are doing it well enough in advance that you will get all your points back, but I'm not in Points so I don't know for sure. In the future, you might try asking for a few extra days' grace period, as Dean has, to get confirmation from DVC.

My FIL sent me the gift certificate for our stay in March and I was able to call DVC to get our reservation number AND find out we are at Kidani in a 1 bedroom savanna view villa! :cool1: I'm really liking RCI right about now.

Thanks for all your help with figuring out RCI/DVC procedures!

Wow! That's great news. Would you mind sharing where your FIL owns? Sounds like it has awesome trading power. Thanks.

He has 72,500 points per year and all I know is that they are made up of 2 different weeks at some huge resort in PA. Silvernail or something is the name of one of them. One they have had at a resort on a lake for Labor Day week since about 25 or so years ago and the other week they added more recently. I don't think they have used their home resort weeks in quite awhile.

That's great! It appears the points is the key. I own a weeks resort in Hawaii and the DVC availability is much more limited at the moment than the points availability. I wonder if you can convert a week resort to points?

I've seen a lot of inventory in both. The difference is that there is no Waitlist with points so everything that comes in makes it at least to the website where with the weeks side, much of the inventory goes to those already on the WL so what you see is only a fraction of what goes to the weeks side. I still think there's more points inventory than weeks at present but not as much as it appears and not as much as some think.
