Varadero, Cuba?

I am not posting this to scare you but it is right on the Jamaica Tourism site! When us travellers mention the cons of going there its not cause we want you NOT to have a nice vacation it is because we are familair with the Island!!!

SAFETY AND SECURITY: Gang violence and shootings occur regularly in certain areas of Kingston and Montego Bay. These areas include, but are not limited to Mountain View, Trench Town, Tivoli Gardens, Cassava Piece, and Arnett Gardens in Kingston, and Flankers in Montego Bay. Some neighborhoods are occasionally subject to curfews and police searches. Impromptu demonstrations can occur, during which demonstrators often construct roadblocks or otherwise block the streets. Travellers should check with local authorities or the U.S. Embassy for current information prior to their trip.

For the latest security information, Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs’ web site at http://travel.state.gov, where the current Travel Warnings and Travel Alerts, as well as the Worldwide Caution, can be found.
Up-to-date information on safety and security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. and Canada, or for callers outside the U.S. and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).

The Department of State urges American citizens to take responsibility for their own personal security while traveling overseas. For general information about appropriate measures travelers can take to protect themselves in an overseas environment, see the Department of State’s pamphlet A Safe Trip Abroad.

CRIME: Crime, including violent crime, is a serious problem in Jamaica, particularly in Kingston. While the vast majority of crimes occur in impoverished areas, the violence is not confined. The primary criminal concern for tourists is becoming a victim of theft. In several cases, armed robberies of Americans have turned violent when the victims resisted handing over valuables. Crime is exacerbated by the fact that police are understaffed and ineffective. Additionally, there have been frequent allegations of police corruption. Tourists should take their own precautions and always pay extra attention to their surroundings when traveling, exercise care when walking outside after dark, and should always avoid areas known for high crime rates.

As a general rule, valuables should not be left unattended or in plain view, including in hotel rooms and on the beach. Care should be taken when carrying high value items such as cameras, or when wearing expensive jewelry on the street. Women's handbags should be zipped and held close to the body. Men should carry wallets in their front pants pocket. Large amounts of cash should always be handled discreetly.

The U.S. Embassy advises its staff to avoid inner-city areas of Kingston and other urban centers, such as those listed in the section on Safety and Security, whenever possible. Particular caution is advised after dark and in downtown Kingston. The U.S. Embassy also cautions its staff not to use public buses, which are often overcrowded and are a frequent venue for crime.

To enhance security in the principal resort areas, the Government of Jamaica has taken a number of steps, including assignment of special police foot and bicycle patrols. However, in 2008 two American families reported having been robbed inside their resort hotel rooms while they slept. Particular care is still called for, however, when staying at isolated villas and smaller establishments that may have fewer security arrangements. Some street vendors, beggars, and taxi drivers in tourist areas aggressively confront and harass tourists to buy their wares or employ their services. If a firm "No, thank you" does not solve the problem, visitors may wish to seek the assistance of a tourist police officer.

Just make sure you read up before you go!!

Thanks for the warnings. I have until Jan 27th, 2010 to cancel and get a full refund. If I find something comparable elsewhere for a similar price I may switch, but I am looking forward to the teen friendly environment at Beaches Resorts, and unfortunately they only have 4 resorts, and 3 of them are in Jamaica!

I have no intention of going off the resort at all, except to take their shuttle back and forth to their sister resorts.

Now, if anyone has recommendations for all inclusives with good teen programs, I would appreciate hearing about them.

Another suggestion..have you thought about a cruise?? We were just on the Carnival glory in January..affordable and sooooo much to do for kids! Teens have a Disco! You never saw kids of any age complain! More to do than at an all-inclusive resort. Food, activities are included..the have basketball courts, batting cage. mini golf.....arcade, Xbox, Wii competitions.... Non stop activities! They make sure that kids at any age have an amazing time!!!!

Thanks for the suggestion, but we aren't interested in taking the kids on a cruise. I would worry much more about their safety roaming around a ship than I would at a resort.

We just went to Jamaica for the first time in January. We spent a week in Ocho Rios and had a great time at the Riu resort. We also took a cab into town several times for some shopping. The vendors in town (the street market particularly ) can be somewhat pushy at times, but for the most part were pleasant and we never felt like we were in any trouble. We were not travelling with children however.

I am starting to look at trying a vacation in Negril in the next year or two. From what I understand it is about a 90 minute ride from the airport in Montego Bay and has great beaches.

Have Fun
John

just be aware that you can't walk off the resort like you can on most islands! And if your kids are girls..keep an eye on them. Especially if anyone is Blonde.....It is a beautiful place! The report you chose is beautiful..have a wonderful time!

We just got back from Jamaica a week ago tomorrow it will be! Awsome place nice people and we did walk off our resort and it was fine! The locals all said Hello we stopped to talk to some .. at our hotel they take your name and room number and what time u leave wether it be walking or taking a cab! U have to check out and in with them. We also hired a taxi guy to take us all over for the day for our tours as it was WAY cheaper then the hotel tours. we payed 100 dollars for the day, between 4 of us ( 25$) each 15 to get into Dunns River Falls right there it was cheaper already from the hotel on a bus it was 48 a person, Just be street smart dont do to places you think you shouldnt ask ppl at your resort what they have done. We were inbetween Montego bay and Ocho Rios .. we walked the whole beach past our hotel as well it was safe!Talk also to the workers at the resort they can tell you where to go and where not to go also. I can not wait to go back.

I am not sure how much checking you have done as far as your flights etc. It is almost always better to book a package like that that includes your airfare, reason being is that they discount the airfare, especially if something is on sale.

As for Jet Blue flying to Montego Bay, at this point they are going to start flying to Montego Bay only out of JFK and it is an early morning flight, 7:35 am with no early transfers into JFK, which means you would have to fly into JFK the night before. A rough estimate for your flights out of JFK would be $1900.00 USD.

Hope that helps.

haven't read all the posts, but have been to Veradero and Montego Bay. We ventured off the resort in Cuba every day both on excursions and self guided shopping/tours on mopeds. Beach is fantastic but also felt very safe as tourists there.

Jamaica not so much, felt much less at ease, never did a tour and absolutely did not go off resort on our own.

Accomodations & food in Cuba are to be expected, not Canadian standards by any means. But we did not starve, there was lots of it.

Def. prefer Cuba over Jamaica. HTH~!

Thanks Laura. I did check flights from Syracuse to Montego Bay on JetBlue (picked a random date in June) and it looked like I could get an early morning flight from SYR, just changing planes in JFK to fly direct from there to Montego Bay. I don't remember what the cost was but I think it was something like $159 each way. I am hoping for a seat sale, of course.

I can't imagine being able to book a package for 2 adults/2 children to a Beaches resort cheaper than the $6K I expect to pay for hotel + flights booked separately. According to the Beaches website, the room itself would ordinarily be $7600 USD! I know that a co-worker is at Beaches Negril right now, 1bdrm beachfront room, and she paid $11K for her family of 3 (package included flights from Ottawa).
