My son has a cross country race here in a couple weeks. We want to stay the night before. Is anybody familiar with this area? I need hotels and restaurants. He will have to be there early in the morning race day.

I don't think there are any suitable hotels in that area. Check out the Fort Lee, NJ area hotels. I think it's about a 15 minute ride over the George Washington Bridge to the park.

I was just there a couple of weeks ago at a Cross Country meet. The car service broke down and we wound up spending four hours at an Irish pub right across the street from the park. I thought I'd had a truly epic day when I caught my seventy-five year old grandmother flirting with the twenty-five year old Irish bartender.

Stay in NYC and take a cab up - definitely the easiest thing to do.

do you run cross country? What a tough sport it is. This year my son is going into winter track, then spring track.
I am not familiar at all with NYC. I have no idea where to stay. I was going to contact FootLocker and see if they have any suggestions. If I stay down town how far of a cab ride will it be to the park? I bet if I drive from the hotel, parking on race day will be difficult.

I ran XC in high school. I usually came in between 20:00 and 22:00. I was team captain but generally second or third on my team time-wise. We went to the Meet of Champions in Holmdel my senior year - I think we were ranked 18th in the state, not bad for a high school with a total of 220 girls. I loved XC, some of my best memories come from those days.

Now, my cousin runs, so I went to see his race in VanCortland.

Let me see if I can find some hotel recommendations for you, though to be honest you could really make it a day trip from Toms River if you wanted to save the money.

(As for me, Van Cortlandt Park starts on about 237th Street. I do not recommend any hotels in the Bronx. None, nada, zip! Or in Harlem for that matter. You might want to try Yonkers, which is nearby. Or you could stay in Manhattan and shlep back and forth).

Our hs team ran homdel last week for Sectionals. We took second. This Saturday Group Championships. Very likely we will be going to MOC the following Saturday. Son is a sophomore and new to running. He made varsity a few weeks ago. He runs between 5th and 7th on his team and his Holmdel time is 17:04. This was his first time running the dreaded Holmdel course other then practice. 20:00 and 22:00 are very good times for girls team. Our school is also small. Our girls are Cape Atlantic League champions, and took sectionals but are not expected to make it to MOC as a team although several girls will be there on their own. Our boys team is ranked 7 I believe. We can never beat Mainland Regional though so we can't get CAL or Group champions. We are always second to Mainland.
Have you ever run the Footlocker race at the end of the season. I believe 5 boys from our school are going.

just Echoing Fergie's sentiment....I would not stay in the Bronx...
hmmm...along with Yonkers, perhaps a hotel White Plains, Rye or elsewhere in Westchester County

I may be running at Vanny also! I ran the 2.5 mile course there as a freshman, and haven't been back since. Sorry, I don't have any info about hotels, etc. though.

Our girls team and our #1 boy made it to Groups this Saturday also, however, we ran Sectionals at Warinanco.

Good luck to your son - It's quite an accomplishment to be Varsity as a sophomore - especially on your son's team! I saw the results, very impressive!

You could try the Hampton Inn in Elmsford - they accept the Entertainment Card discount - rooms are clean, and breakfast is included.

Elmsford is right off the Sprain Brook Parkway, which will bring ya's to da Bronx. :)
