Value of vacations--How much is too much?

I look at
* when we are able to go; sometimes school schedules or work locks us into certain dates and they are what they are
* how much I WANT to spend
* what fits that price range
* how can I help save for that.

I have to say travel has almost always been worth it to us and we've enjoyed our times. I will also say that we draw the line at certain high amounts (like the cruise FIL wanted and BIL could only go over Christmas which was so high that neither DH or I wanted to spend that much on the vacation). I often do a comparison -- do I want to do this trip or do I want a working bathroom? Sometimes those are the choices I have!

What about going further south from Cancun to the Riviera Maya? There are some all inslusives there that are well priced. It would still require the airfare to Cancun, but the resorts are not bad. We are planning to go to the Barcelo Maya in the next year or so, I heard about it here on the DIS. Way more affordable than Jamaica or one of the Beaches resorts.
