I am having a gum procedure done later this week. She said they remove the gum from the root structure and clean deep down, then reattach the gum with stitches. :scared1: I opted out of the nitrous since it was $140 and not covered by insurance and went with the valium option.

To those of you with dental anxiety (I don't normally but this procedure sounds horrendous!), do you find that taking the valium helps?

:scared1: Ack! That sounds major. I have panic attacks with dental work sometimes. I tried to have a crown put on once with only Valium--my dentist told me it was MUCH better than nitrous. She lied. I woke up halfway through like a cat that got thrown into a puddle. Hysterical. And not in a funny way, either.

You might want to talk to your dentist about a payment plan for that nitrous. Believe me, I'd be signing up for the nitrous AND the valium.

For something like that, I would probably use both nitrous and valium.

Whelp! That's not the encouragment I wanted!

*Calling dentist now to add nitrous. Hopefully it is not too late. :scared1:

Whew! I was able to add it.

I'm doing valuim and the nitrous now. Good thing I'm not doing anything for the rest of the day.

Wow, is nitrous that good for everyone? I've had it once during wisdom teeth removal. I had a "bad reaction" to it and was sure the oral surgeon was trying to kill me. I mean I REALLY believed it. No nitrous for me ever again, thanks!

Well, on the bright side, if I'm having a bad reaction and think the dentist is trying to kill me, the valium will make me not care.

My DH had a reaction like that one time. He went in for wisdom teeth extraction and told the "nurse" that he couldn't tolerate nitrous. She put the mask on him and told him it was "just some oxygen." Well, about 10 minutes later I can hear violent profanity, instruments hitting walls and floor, and crashing sounds coming from the back office. In about another 5 min the "nurse" came out and said, "Um, we seem to have a little problem." Yeah, I just bet you do. :rolleyes1 Turns out DH had bit her! Not to mention that he had just about destroyed the exam room while under the influence. They let the nitrous wear off and he agreed to go ahead with the procedure but I bet they all got a lesson in Active Listening that day.

I can't do nitrous either. Brings on a panic attack like I've never experienced and 100% certainty that the dentist and whoever else is around are bad guys and that I have to get away immediately.

But I don't know that valium would be enough for me based on what you are describing.

I had this procedure and you might want to reconsider the nitrous. I DO NOT HAVE dental anxiety. How much valium did they give you? I could hear the sounds of what they were doing and I told the surgeon I was feeling like I wanted to punch him. Seriously. I liked the guy but it was bad. By the way, they did my whole mouth. Maybe yours is a small area?

I did reconsider the nitrous and ordered it. lol It is 10mg of Valium.

I am getting the right side done this time then in 4-6 weeks the left side. And to finish it off I'm having the gum in the front of my mouth grafted with skin from the roof of my mouth. I was planning on nitrous for that one from the get go! lol

10mg of valium and nitrous, you should be comfortably numb.

I've had alot of dental work done and still more to go.But what there gonna be doing to you just sounds painful reading.Good luck..

Good luck OP. I'm glad you decided to get the nitrous after all in addition to the valium. Hope you have a good experience with the nitrous.

I had this done about 6 years ago.

I didn't have the gas, but did have iv. I was expecting to be in twilight sleep, but was awake, alert the whole time and talked (what little I could) with the dentist the whole time. I never felt a thing, but I was awake the whole 3 hours. My jaw muscle was extremely sore and cramped up about a week after this. That was the worst part.

Good luck to you.

My heart goes out to those of you who cannot tolerate nitrous oxide. It is a wonderful thing. :upsidedow

I highly recommend the nitrous for the gum graft (and the deep scaling for that matter). The valium will calm you slightly but PP is right - you will hear everything. Honestly, the deep scaling is NOT as bad as they make it sound. My other suggestion - BRING YOUR IPOD - it helped me a lot! Good Luck!
