Wifey was complaining, something was clogged on the vac. I took apart the roller assembly and got rid of the usual hair, lint, etc that had wrapped around it.
But, it was still pretty gross looking. The plastic "broom" fibers sticking out were various shades of black and brown and the whole thing felt greasy.
I looked online for a replacement. Yeah, I can get one -- $43.99!
I looked in my shed for a bucket -- hmm the gallon pail was a little short, but it would work. Six ounces of powder Oxygen bleach in a gallon of hottish water. About three-quarters of an hour later, I turned the roller upside down to get the part of it that was sticking out of the water into the soak.
Another hour later, took it out, rinsed it -- looked new. Cheaper than buying a new one.
Our roller is wood. I was a bit worried that soaking it would cause some damage, but it has been six months and no issues (and I am going to treat it again tonight, which is why I am posting now).
Think about it. A greasy, mucky roller moving over your carpet....yuck.
BTW, getting ready to clean for Thanksgiving relatives visiting, which is what really set me moving....
