After years of no carpeting, we are finally putting carpet back into the living room and dining room. Can you please share any info on vacuum cleaners. Looking for one that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. We have 4 dogs and a cat. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Don't want to spend more than $150.

I've worked as a house cleaner for many years. Used many different types of vaccums. Other then the Dyson which unfortunately is twice your price. There isn't anything that I have found that works as well and particuarlly on animal hair.

I agree with zurgswife-- the Dyson Animal is the best ever. If you don't want to pay the hefty pricetag, you can wait for Black Friday when it's usually on sale, buy it with a 20% off coupon from Bed Bath & Beyond, or buy a refurbished one from a local vacuum shop.

zurgswife & mainstreetmomma - are you talking about the canister or upright version of the Dyson Animal?

BB&B is fantastic. Not only would they meet a certain "supercenters" online price - they let me use the 20% off coupon as well. :woohoo: I was able to get my Hoover Platinum upright for a steal.

Plus nobody can touch their hassel free return policy! :thumbsup2

I have an Oreck XL21 and I love it. It is very lightweight and does a great job. I used to have a Dyson which I liked, (not the Animal though...), but I like the Oreck better. Also, it has a 21-year full warranty as long as you bring it in once a year for a free tune-up and cleaning.

Unfortunately it is out of your price range, but I consider it an investment.

I have always heard Dyson is great, but that would exceed the $150 limit. I am still wanting one, if Kohls ever has a 30% off and stuff again stackable with some other promo stuff, I would be very tempted.

With 4 dogs and a cat I would just skip the carpet :lmao::lmao::lmao:

Just got a dyson animal and I have to say it is worth every penny!!!

I'm sorry, but if you have all those pets + carpet, then $150 just isn't enough. I'm speaking as someone with 5 cats and 3 dogs inside, plus 2 more dogs who prefer the outdoors but are welcome inside whenever they ask.

I tried EVERYTHING, even a Rainbow. :scared1: Only the Dyson worked for us. I watched Woot (woot.com) and got a great deal on one. The advice about BB&B is great, too! If you want pets and carpet, you really need an amazing vacuum or you're going to have all kinds of nastiness trapped in the carpet which can make you sick, even if you don't have allergies or asthma. Spend the extra $$, you will not regret it. :thumbsup2

Just keep watching for deals and coupons. You can find one you can afford if you are savvy about it.

I've been pricing Dyson's today after reading this thread. The Animal retails for $549 at Sears, Kohls & BB&B. Sears has a 30% off coupon in today's flyer so the cost would be $385 at Sears and you can have it shipped to your local Sears store for free.

We love our Kirby!!!

My mom bought her Kirby in 1950, it's still going strong. But boy are they expensive.
We've had our Riccar for about 20 years, plan to run it until I inherit the Kirby.

IMO, DO NOT buy the Hoover "pets plus" vacuum. We bought it..... it is absolute garbage in every way. It doesn't pick up well. The cord starts to pull itself back into the machine on its own. It is a pain in the butt to empty.

Sometimes know what NOT to buy is just as good as knowing what to buy. :thumbsup2

I have had an Oreck for years. I did have a dog. It did a good job on the dog hair.

Do they let you use a 30% off coupon on Dyson? I would bet not.... Dyson probably has rules against it. If you can, what a bargain! :thumbsup2

I know Kohl's does for sure. They have them on sale frequently too.

OP, go to Kohl's and pick up the DYSON (its 12 lbs) and see if you are into the weight of that vacuum. I just bought myself a new vacuum and prior to purchasing I had friends tell me this one or that one etc etc. I do not have any pets.

I decided on the ORECK XL Silver! I have 3 floors I have to vacuum, all the stairs are carpeted. The Oreck is light weight and does an amazing job. :thumbsup2
