So which do you recommend - Dyson or Oreck? Which model?

I'm leaning towards an Oreck because I know it is built in the USA. I am trying to purchase as much as possible made in the US but it is difficult to find. I'm trying to definitely avoid China.

TIA

I've had my Oreck for 7 years with no problems. It's an XL, but I don't know how to compare it to the current models. It was one of the top ones in 2003. I love the fact it's so lightweight and the handheld it came with is good for corners, mouldings, woodwork, etc. It also came with a cordless iron that I gave to one of my sons. Where I get my hair done uses the handheld to vacuum hair off of customers and they've had theirs for years.

I bought an ORek EL also about 6 months ago. I was thrilled with it. I did have to buy belts as I want to have them on hand. The kids are natorious for sweeping up items that break a belt. So far we have been good though.

I love how light it is and makes the carpet look so newly swept. I think mine was $299, two tune ups a year, I bought the paper bags to save cost.

I really hate to pay more then that for a vacuum.
OH, do not use the powder based carpet fresheners. I killed two of my other vacuums burning up the motor with them clogging. Orek has a great scent item, and does not kill the vacuum.

I really love my Oreck XL, too. I just wish it had onboard attachements! It is a pain to get out the handheld all the time.

However, I stick with the Oreck because it is so incredibly light. We have a big staircase that I need to carry it up and down. It does a great job of going from carpet to bare floors. I just can't make myself spend the kind of money that a Dyson costs.

We don't have any luck with our belts on the Oreck XL. And we only have one 5x8 area rug and one runner to clean so I don't see the problem why it's always needing belts?? Next vacuum I am going to get a Bissell bagless from Walmart, I did a search and some people were pleased with that. I think the cost of one is between $40 to $70. Since we don't have alot of carpet, it will do the job.

I don't know much about the Orecks, but I know I would love to have a Dyson, I have only heard good things about them.

Last March I needed a new vacuum and the decision was between the Oreck XL or the Dyson!
I went to Kohl's and picked up the Dyson to check it out and it is soooooo heavy.
Then I went to Target and I picked up the Oreck and my decision was made! The Oreck is so light weight and I have 3 floors! :thumbsup2
Now I have had my Oreck for 10 months and I absolutely love it! :thumbsup2

I LOVE MY ORECK!! Best gift I ever received. Will buy another one if this thing ever dies.

My vacuum wasn't sucking recently so I bought a new one. I got the Dyson DC 17 animal non-ball. I love it! On my main floor I currently have carpet, hardwood and vinyl (soon to be tile) and being able to turn off the beater bar is so nice. The vacuum is bringing carpet back to life that was starting to go flat after only 2 years. I don't find it heavy at all and I take it up and down 2 flights of stairs. I love the extension on it and the fact that the tools are right there and the wand is built right in to the handle. It moves so smoothly and I have very thick carpet on the main floor (I used to break a sweat with the old vacuum - no more :) )

I bought mine from Costco and it was delivered in about 5 days http://www.costco.com/Browse/Produc...=1&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Nty=1&topnav=&s=1

I bought a Dyson Animal upright about 5 years ago. It's heavy and cumbersome, and the wand is difficult to use. On the plus side, it has great suction to pick up dog hair from my 2 German shepherds. I want to replace it, but it's just not in the budget.

I have a dyson and LOVE it, but I've heard good things about Oreck's as well.

I have a DYSON...and HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE IT!

Me too. I was in love with it when I first got it; my old house carpet and the crap it got up was unreal. But now that I moved and have all hardwood floors it just not suck up the small pieces of dust. Plus after only 4 years, the floor part will not suck and I can only use the wand.

this might seem stupid but are you sure your old one died? Sometimes a vaccum repair place can bring it back to life:)

My mom hated the oreck but my sister loves it:confused3 At least with the oreck you can try it and return it if you don't like it....not sure the dyson policy

What's with the problems people are having with their belts on their Oreck's? In 7 years I haven't had to change mine. Now, we have more hardwood than carpet, and my kids are grown and don't live with us, but I still have area rugs and about 800 sq feet of carpeted bedrooms to vacuum, although not as often in the 3 spare rooms. But, still, what's causing the belt problem?

I have a small stickbroom type vacuum that I use on my hardwoods and tile too.
