Vacation on a budget near pittsburgh

RE: Pittsburgh is lame comment - Pittsburgh is not lame! It is a fantastic place to visit and also to raise a family. The only reason I would love to move away is I can't stand the winter!!! There are so many things all over the region to do for all ages/interests. Just because the area is divided regionally doesn't mean that there aren't lots of things to do. My boys and I are out almost every weekend just doing different things. We live in the South Hills but we head all over the area (North, East & West) Step out of your comfort zone and explore!!!

For weekend getaways, we like

renting a cabin at Pymatuning State Park
going to Cedar Point (we stay at either Kalahari or Castaway Bay)
Niagara Falls
Staying a night or two at Station Square and then enjoying the City
Cleveland (yeah - your heard me right :lmao:) It really is a nice city as well with lots to do

What about Deep Creek, MD?

That's EXACTLY what I was going to say! Lots to do at WISP in every season. Fun places to stay and a GREAT market in Oakland that carries every candy you can possibly imagine. Think Willy Wonka on steriods and then "Bam" kick it up a notch. Super fun for kids.

Lancaster, PA/ Hershey PA is also fun. Take in the factory tours in the York area, go to Gettysburg, enjoy delish Amish food.

Funny, I live south of Cleveland (Akron area) and am dying to get out of here & move over to Pittsburgh. I'm originally from north of Pittsburgh but have lived in NE Ohio most of my life so I'm very familiar with both cities... Pittsburgh tops Cleveland by FAR. :thumbsup2

(in my humble opinion, of course)

Hi Suz D. I'm from Morgantown. :)

I'm not sure Deep Creek is doable for $1000 on a holiday weekend. DCL is expensive all year but especially during the summer and holiday weekends. And it's not much fun without a boat.

I'm going to suggest the Gettysburg area. There is so much to do around there. You could do Harper's Ferry, Antetiem,Gettysburg, etc.

Or, DC and/or Baltimore would be good too.

I'm glad you recommended Wellsboro because we just booked a chalet there for our summer vacation. We are coming from Ontario, and wanted someplace different. We don't know much about the area, but thought it looked like a great place for an outdoorsy vacation. We're going to be down the during the Little League World Series, so DS is hoping we can get tickets to one of the preliminary games. Williamsport looks like a reasonable drive from where we are staying.

I am from Williamsport and it is an easy trip. I will see what you have to do to score tickets to the games. When I lived there all the games were free.

It's been a while since I was there but we enjoyed it for a long weekend. They also have a scenic train ride. Have fun!
