(not sure exactly where this belongs, so feel free to move if necessary or point me in the right direction)

When booking a vacation package through the Disney site, it offers vacation insurance.

Do you purchase the insurance? Why or why not?

We've never been on vacation before, and we've never been to Disney before... so we're unsure if we should get that insurance or not. It's $133.90 and while that's not much compared to our package price, we're not sure if we shoud have skipped it or gone with it.

I dont' know the ins and outs of Disney's insurance (for example, does it include coverage for your flights if you haven't purchased them through Disney??).

I can say that I've recently realized the benefit of having vacation insurance, and we always have it....you just never know what when and where things might happen, you know?

So, having said that, I absolutely LOVE insuremytripdotcom. You can type in your information and compare many different policies at once, and they have wonderful customer service if you have any questions at all!

Have a fantastic trip!!

Hi,

Here a link to a good article at Mousesavers.com. It's about 1/2 way down the page.

http://www.mousesavers.com/packages.html#insurance

As you pointed out, its a small part of the total cost, and if something unforseen (like swine flu) postpones your trip, this allows you to recover.

I buy it and have used it when I got stranded in NJ on a return trip.

Theer are other insurers, so look at the policies and premiums and see what fits you. I found the WDW pricing as good as any, and it does included airfare, but I believe there are some restrictions.

We always use insuremytrip.com, regardless of destination. They offer more comprehensive insurance than the Disney policy (i.e. if you are travelling during hurricane season, you can get a policy through Travelers that covers you in the event of a hurricane and the Disney policy does not) and usually you can get something a bit cheaper. For our trip the week before last, we saved about $25 over the Disney policy. It's not alot, but it's $25 more you can spend at WDW.

A few caveats...you must purchase the insurance within two weeks of your initial vacation payment in order to obtain the most comprehensive coverage (i.e. hurricane coverage). You can purchase the insurance at any time, but if you're outside that two week window, you won't get the best coverage.

Also, we booked a bounceback while at WDW. I called last week to purchase our insurance for next year's trip so we'd be within the two week window (we go in September and there is a risk of hurricanes then). If you have to cancel for illness, most illnesses are covered with a doctor's excuse; however, I found out that swine flu is not covered under any policy right now. If you want swine flu coverage, you have to purchase an additional rider. I did not as I'm hoping it will not be a big issue next year. I figure we went to WDW during this year's swine flu hysteria and we had a wonderful healthy vacation, with no illness, and we flew (gasp!). Finally, if you go to insuremytrip and have questions, I've always found the customer service people to be very knowledgeable and helpful. The phone number is right on the website and they can answer any specific questions you may have before you buy.

Anyway...good luck and have a great vacation. :goodvibes
