Vacation days

Having read alot to reports and discussions I am curious to know how many days vacation most of you guys get in a year. I ask because most of the trips are only a few days.

Just hoping can give me a rough idea.

Over here in the UK we get approx 28 days each year (not including public holidays).

I work at a bank and get 14 PTO days (Paid Time Off) this does not include the public holidays I also recieve when the bank is closed.

I have worked for an insurance company for 17 years and get 29 days off, which does not include holidays.

Most large companies start out giving employees 10 days off, increasing with years of employment.

I teach 9/1 - 6/30 each school year, and do take summers off (though without pay!), as well as the usual government- or district-scheduled holidays.

I have been with my current employer for 6 years and my total number of "PTO" is 192 hrs/year or 24 days. This doesn't include all holidays, but in my case does include what used to be called "floating" holidays, and also sick time . Here in the U.S., paid vacation (or Paid Time Off) is totally up to the discretion of the individual employer, & as the pp said, the amount given usually depends on the individuals longevity with a particular employer. How does it work in the U.K.?

i work 3 days/week for a bank (12 years) and get three weeks vacation which equals nine days for me... i also get all bank holidays and never have to work weekends... plus i get some sicktime pro-rated based on the number of hours i accumulate... i am also fortunate that i can switch my days around and make long weekends if i choose (normal schedule is m/w/f but i can work t/w/th or any other combination thereof)

Sick days is a very US concept - normally in the UK you don't get given sick days as such - if you are ill then you take the day off - you get paid for it - some employers require a doctors note if you are off for more than 2 days in a row - with my old company it used to be 5 days. I think there is a government guideline that says after a certain amount of sick time then your employer can cut your pay to a percentage but I've been lucky in that mine always paid me in full.

Now i'm here in Houston it's taken some getting used to.

I get 15 paid vacation days, 15 sick days and 2 personal days ea year and holidays

We recently had the option of changing from a combo of sick/vacation days to PTO where I work, and I made the change. Although I now accrue less per payperiod under PTO, I have more flexibility in how I use my time. I have worked at my present employer for 15 years and I now earn 8.31 hours of PTO per payperiod, or 27 days per year. After completion of this year, my PTO will increase to 30 days per year. This is in addition to 11 holidays per year. I had over 500 hours of sick leave accrued when I made the transition to PTO, so was able to bank those hours to use as extended sick leave, and use under our sick leave guidelines whenever desired/needed. We are able to carry over up to 500 hours of PTO from one year to the next. I also accrue comp time if I work more than 40 hours per week; I am in management so I accrue 1 hour of time off for each hour over 40 worked. I can use comp time accrued like PTO, but can't carry more than 40 hours over from one year to the next, and can never have more than 60 hours on the books. Kind of a nice time off plan, if you ask me.

With holidays in the UK is mainly depends on the company for example I work for a large investment bank and get 28 days per year plus 8 bank holidays. As for sick leave we get whatever we need and still get paid. For a serious illness though it works out that you can take 1 year off as paid leave then another year at half pay.

If for example you are a construction worker or labour worker (ie builder, elextrician etc) you do not get paid sick leave and probably only 15 - 20 days holiday a year.

Hope this gives youj a bit of insight on my side of the pond.

For myself I get 4 weeks vacation and 6 days of floating holidays. The reason that we are going for only 8 days is because of the cost involved. I am spending near 8000.00 for this trip with the five of us. This does include my flight, tickets and polynesian. I would love to take two weeks vacation to spend at wdw but can't financially afford it. But will certainly enjoy the 8 days that we have there. Can't wait for September.

Since nobody knows me here, I can vent. In Canada the labour laws say that full time people after so many years service have to get 10 days paid vacation days. There are 9 legal holidays that also must be paid. So my husband (who has a very cheap boss) can work for the rest of his life and only get the 2 weeks off. Most big companies give 3 weeks after 5 years, 4 after 10 years etc. but not for us. My oldest daughter already gets more vacation time than my husband. Last year he took an extra week off without pay by threatening to quit. Anyway I believe that most people in Europe are not the workaholics that we have here and know how to balance life - I wish we could take a few lessons in that department.

I have been with my company for more than five years, and I get 20 days of PTO each year. However, my boss is fairly understanding, so if I need to stay home with a sick kid and work from home, he won't count that against me.

My dh has been with his company for more than two years and he gets around three weeks of vacation time each year, and unlimited sick leave. No one really abuses it, so it's there to use at their discretion.

My husband is from Europe, and apparently, when he worked there, he received an extra month's paycheck in July and another in December. So he got 14 paychecks each year, and at least 25 days off for vacation. That's not even counting the holidays! I sometimes wonder why we are still here in the US, haha.

Wow, most of you guys are really lucky. I only get 10 days of vacation a year and no sick days. At my last job, I didn't get any paid vacation days.

I am a government worker. In Hawaii, all gov workers get 21 days paid sick leave and 21 days paid vacation.

It's a great benefit. I know it sounds excessive to some, but hey, you haven't seen how SMALL my paycheck is. There have to be some trade-offs.

I'm jealous of all of you. I am self employed so I get no paid days off and if I'm sick, it costs me a lot to hurl! lol Anyway, just feeling sorry for myself Last year, when I had my third baby I really saw this huge downside to being self-employed as it was my first time taking a few months off with no pay (I had to pay a colleague almost all my earnings to work for me while I was off). When I had my other two children I was an employee and got very good maternity leave - I loved not having to work for those months last year but was annoyed and worried sick having no income Now I know why my Dad was pushing me to get that permanent, pensionable job when I left school. Sorry Dad
