Vacation Days/PTO

Again, I get it paid out, as in a couple thousand dollars that I would not have if I took the days off and used the vacation time to replace money I would have made to pay bills. I can save a couple thousand dollars to buy a house if I don't use my vacation time and get paid the extra money. Not too difficult to understand.

$0 money, can't buy a house.
$3-4000 put away every January, can buy a house after a few years.

Not everyone sits on a gold mind at their jobs and can just go out and buy whatever they need at any moment or chose to stop investing the equivalent of a full income into their retirement to buy a house. Some people have to save extra money up to get what they need.

That’s definitely not the norm to get unused days paid out every year. No need to sound so bitter about it.

Yes, getting paid out for unused vacation time, IF your employer allows that, many do not, is a good way to get some extra money. BUT, even homeowners can do that. Maybe they want to use the money for a vacation, a hobby, medical bills, college tuition, or probably a thousand other things. Your original comment about "I'm not in a house" didn't make sense to me either.

Nothing in this post:

I get them paid out and don't live in a house. I should take every minute I earn?

Guy at work says pretty much the same. He states he thinks people should be fired if they don't use their time off. Again, he lives in a house.

mentions anything about using a payout to buy a house. It just comes across as people that live in some other form of housing shouldn't take PTO. It also specifically says "lives in a house" which has nothing to do with owning a house. Many people rent houses.

Mentioning clearly in the original post that you use the payout towards a down payment of a house would have gone a long way to making it clear what the heck you were talking about. That being said getting unused PTO paid out isn't a guarantee for ever so I'd look at it as a nice non-guaranteed bonus and not something you'll get every year forever.

It's an ongoing discussion that people jumped in and quoted me. Here was my first post...

I would be close to point #4.

We don't roll them over. We get paid out in January for unused vacation or sick time. 33 years working I've "called off sick" twice, because each of my girls ended up in the hospital with pneumonia.

I get 5 weeks vacation. I take a week in the summer and a day here or there. I don't currently own a house and have 5 months until I can think of starting to regularly save so I get paid out at least 3 weeks of vacation time in January which goes into the house savings fund. Hopefully the market crashes and I can buy a discounted home as after this past 2 years, I have no hope of buying one.

I can't help if people jump in the middle of discussions. I know I have before jumped in before reading the entire discussion and gotten things wrong. I don't continue at that point whether I come back to humbly state I was wrong or not. I don't quote people several more times after I've realized I jumped into the middle of a discussion.

You are correct. The policy is not forever. The policy use to be you could sell back 2 weeks of unused vacation and you get a $50 gift card for not calling off sick. That changed to you can sell back up to 2 weeks at any time of the year and everything else including the 24 hours of sick time be paid out automatically in January. What possibly happens with policy change in 2023 is no concern to what the policy is in 2022, the current year. Nor does future policy change anything that has already occurred in the past. Thus, at the time this thread was created, what I stated is true, we get paid out unused time in January and I use that money to save up for a house.

I have about 250 hours of PTO that I haven't used. I'm planning to retire at the end of the year, so I guess I'll quit working in early November but still get paid until the end of the year.

You are right, I missed that first reply entirely. My apologies.

We get a certain amount per pay period based on how long we have been with the company. I've been here almost 11 years and accrue 8.924 per pay period (every two weeks). That adds up to 232.024 per year or 5.8006 weeks. We can have up to 300 hrs in our PTO bank. If you hit that amount, you just stop accruing. You can cash out some of the hours, but they tax it so heavily! I was close to it, but made sure to take a day off here and there just to keep accruing. My PTO is very important to me and I want every minute I'm entitled to! This amount includes holidays, sick time, and vacation. I currently have 266 hours in my bank. We usually go to Disney twice a year but during Covid its been 1x, and I didn't take off any time to just stay around locally so I've been able to build up quite a bit. I like having a lot saved up, in case I have to miss for an illness or injury. I don't generally take off more than a day unless I have a reason. (I don't take off just to sit at home). My company doesn't discourage people from using their time off, but someone does have to cover my job while I'm off and I try not to inconvenience anyone if I don't have to. Thankfully I like my job, so its not a burden.

My time is divided into sick time and leave time. I only use my sick time if I'm actually too sick/hurt to work, or may be infectious. I was in a serious accident in 2018 and was off work for 4 months--I was very glad I had ample sick time accrued.

I can carry 240 hours of leave time into the next calendar year. I use all of my "use or lose" leave time and try to carry the full 240 into the next year.
