Does anyone have a vacation account for Disney? How do you save up? I'm trying to find an easier way than teh way we have been doing our vacations and it would be a lot simpler if we could have a Disney Vacation account. Is this available for us Canadians?
No flames or personal opinions on how you think it works or should work please

I have just simply opened a savings account, and each paycheck I have an amount deposited directly into that account. It is basically like having a pre-authorized bill payment, but the money goes into a savings account which we use for our Disney vacations.

I have a savings account too but I have to transfer the funds myself each time I want to make a deposit. The majority of our Disney trip funds is my income tax refund and then I supplement from there.

I have the following as a copping mechanism:

  • US Dollar saving account that I put money into. I purchase left over money US from returning friends and through the bank when exchanges dip.
  • am a chronic Mileage plus points saver for United and that occasionally pays off.
  • I also use my points from my Scotiabank American express to get US dollar Disney cards
  • I plan my trip around the cheapest time to fly ... ie I find the fare as step one, and then plan around it

I do some work on the side and that money goes directly towards vacations. I also put money into my US account every pay check.

Ted I didn't know you could get US Disney cards from Amex! Gotta look into that! I'm jealous that folks in the states can buy $1800 of Disney gift cards at sam's club for $1300! They also have more lax Couponing rules.

I do the automatic take from my pay into a savings account too.

OK that's cool I like the Disney gift cards idea.
We were set to go next month but had to cancel out and reschedule for spring time sometime. Only problem we had is this was planned and now the money is just sitting there. I do have good discipline but what if...uhh lets say we decide to buy a new car LOL. I read up on American vacation account and would have been nice to have it for us too so we could just deposit in there and vacation whenever we feel like there is enough to go. I just really have no intention on joining DVC. I think we'll look into the American savings account.

I use a few methods...

1) TD US Borderless account. Transfer online to the account

2) TFSA - I get it automatically deposited into my account through weekly payroll deductions

3) Timmies tin - this I use for my sons spending money. I just throw whatever change is in my pocket and when it comes time for the trip we take it to the bank, convert it to US money and that is his to spend. Once it is gone it is gone and nothing else. We do it this way so he sees how long it takes to save. We figure he gets money this way or asking us everyday for it *lol*

With Tangerine (formerly ING) you can have up to I think 10 savings account to label as you wish. This includes US$ accounts. We have both Tangerine US$ accounts and TD US$ account and a US based bank account through TD.Why so many? The rate to exchange dollars is better through ING, plus I can leave them in a higher rate account to earn interest until I need it for a trip. I then transfer it online from the Tangerine account to the TD account for free. We then transfer is through TD's cross border banking for free. Whole process takes about 3 days but doesn't cost us a cent and makes it easy for us to save. We use Tangerine accounts in the same way Gail Von Oxley uses her cash jars. Every cheque we slot the money into the different savings accounts for items we are saving for such as clothes, vacations, home renos and savings. Everything else stays in the operating/chequing account for debit/day to day expenses.

If interested, you can get a Tangerine account by going to www.tangerine.ca. If you open an account enter this key: 22441930S1. It gives both of us a bonus. And while I recognize I can get a bonus if you join using the key, I genuinely like the flexibility of their product especially to save for Disney trips.

I personally set my family up in the Disney Savings Club a few months ago and I love it. Of course I am living here in the states so I don't know how it translates to you in Canada but I send money into the account with every paycheck and I was surprised at how quickly the money accumulates. I also purchase the $50 gift cards from target and with my target red card I get 5% off of each card so I pay only $47.50 for $50 and I can deposit those right into the account as well. It was easy to redeem to, I just called and booked our trip to WDW for next September and just gave the Disney booking agent my Disney savings account number and the deposit came right out. I don't know how it will be once we get to WDW next year and if we can link our magic bands to the account so we can just use the money out of there but knowing that I am just putting money in and not having direct access to it with a debit or credit card is what I like. Makes saving for Disney trips which we like to take every two years or so easier to save for but if I needed to close the account I like that I can do it at anytime. It is all new to me but so far I a have nothing but positive feelings about it. I hope that this helps.

My sister uses Canada Savings Bond Payroll Deduction.
It comes off her pay each week and she cashes out what she needs each trip...and keeps the rest in for a rainy day ;)
