I've seen a re-sale of 150 points with a UY of Feb. We typically like to travel in Oct, that's now.....If for some reason something happens and we need to cancel our Oct trip, we'd need to use these points before the end of Jan, because we'd be passed our banking time,,,,correct??

Yes, that's correct. We started with a FEB UY and typically travel in the Fall so we ended up selling those contracts and went with an AUG UY for the VGC. When we initially bought into DVC the banking deadline were different and once they changed to the current rules we weren't comfortable taking the chance we could loose our points if we had to cancel a trip. Our trips to WDW usually have extended family and use up alot of points.

Actually, February could work fine. The banking deadline is Sept 30th but you'd have to be cancelling your Oct reservation in Sept anyway in order to not have the points go into holding. If you cancel 30 days or less from your vacation then the points are in holding and need to be used by the end of your UY.

You would have to use those points before the end of the UY, only if you didn't cancel before September 30th. As PP stated, you would be doing that for Oct trips anyway to avoid them becoming holding points.

But, if you made a trip with borrowed points and cancelled that trip, regardless of when, those would have to be used by the end of January.

OK, I'm getting all this. We really want BCV, but don't want a contract that has no points left for this year. We'd like to go in Oct and although I'm fairly certain due to food and wine we wouldn't be able to stay at BC, we'd get something, somewhere.....

So the optimal use year would be closest to your normal travel period without going past it. We've been the last five years,,,all but one were in Oct.

IMO, for maximum flexibility, the best UY is right before you typically travel. We own June and travel primarily in August right now and will be for the most part until retirement (I teach).

When you travel at the beginning, you have a lot of time to bank points, change a trip or re-book if a cancellation has to occur.

In addition to primary travel time, think about when else you might go. For us, that was the fall or the holidays. The least likely time will always be the spring so having June made the most sense.

In your case, if you didn't go in Oct, when else would you go? If summer is an option, then you want something like April or June so it will cover those times as well. If not, than having a Sept or Oct UY will do nicely for fall and winter trips.

Feb UY works okay for Oct trips but is not the best one for trips around the holidays.

I would think about all of that when deciding on which UY to strive for when purchasing.

Good luck!
