Getting ready to start shopping for a resale and would like input on determining my best UY.

I know for a fact we will almost never travel between May-September. What other factors should I consider??

If you are concerned about potentially needing to cancel and still having the ability to bank those points then pick a UY, which you do not typically travel in the 3 preceding months. PP has picked a good one for you

Use Year only matters if you have to cancel a vacation that was scheduled to occur in the last four months of your Use Year. That's because banking of points is not allowed during the last four months of your Use Year and you don't have much time to reschedule before the points expire. Many owners never have to cancel a vacation, so they don't worry about Use Year.

If you travel about the same time of year on a regular basis, it may be best to choose a Use Year that starts right before that timeframe, or at least falls no more than 7 or 8 months prior to that time. Keep in mind that your travel pattern may change over the course of your DVC ownership. What starts out as a "perfect" use year may end up being not so perfect later on.

If you never travel May to September, I would think October would be best for you. That would give you until May 31 to bank points.

I agree that October will be a good UY for you. The 8 months in which you could make a vacation, cancel it, and still be able to bank points would be October through May. Points for vacations planned during June through September (with this UY), if cancelled, would not be eligible for banking.

It sounds like those are the months you tend NOT to travel so I think that would work.

We are getting ready to buy DVC at Kidani Village. We tend to always go in Jan. or Feb. - so, if I'm reading this correctly - a good UY for us would be March? Is that right?

Thanks

Thank you all for your help. I am thinking March or April will indeed be best due to the majority of my trips will be Dec, Jan or Feb. This will also put the points in my account far enough out that I can book those dates early before they fill up.

Thanks again

UY month has nothing to do with when you can book!

the advice for an april UY was terrible and most likely based on a misunderstanding. the other posters are offering much better advice.

if you travel primarily in dec-feb, an october UY is a much better idea.

here's a thread with more detailed information on use year if you need it...

chalee94 is 100% correct, I miss read the OP. APRIL is a bad UY for the OP.

It easiest way to pick a UY is to pick a month just prior to the start of your normal vacation time. We travel during the cooler months starting in November so we have a October UY. That gives us until May 31st to bank points if required.

OK - so then I was reading it wrong then too???

We always go in Jan./Feb. so I should have a Nov./ Dec. UY???? Is that right??? :confused3 :confused3

is your uy strictly a factor of when you join or sign up for dvc or is it something you can chose yourself with guide assistance?

since my family usually vacations something between late august
to early nov, what would be our best uy?

i apprecaite your help,

June would work well for you, There isn't a July UY.

Now I am confused. Could I book a trip at my home resort 11 months from today if I had zero points in my account but will be awarded my points for that year between today and the day of my check in??

That is how it works. The points must be in your account during the time of travel, not the time when you book.

For example, I have an October UY and booked a weekend at BLT in December last week. My points won't be in my account until October, but will be there by the time we go.

Hope this helps!

Points don't drop into your account at the start of a new Use Year, they are all there right from the start when you purchase your contract. Each allotment of points has a set of dates associated with them. For example, let's say you purchase an October UY:

Your Oct 2008 points are valid for stays from 10/1/08 - 9/30/09
Your Oct 2009 points are valid for stays from 10/1/09 - 9/30/10
Your Oct 2010 points are valid for stays from 10/1/10 - 9/30/11
and so on through the end of your contract

You can book your home resort using home resort points starting 11 months from check in. If you wanted to call MS today to book a stay in Jan 2010, your Oct 2009 points would be valid for your travel dates. MS would draw the points required for your reservation from your Oct 2009 allotment. You could also bank points from your Oct 2008 UY and use those for a stay that falls within your Oct '09 UY. You could also borrow points from your Oct '10 UY.

All of those points would be in your account already. They would have to be so that MS could draw the points to pay for the reservation you were trying to book. You could also see them on the members' website. You can look at your point balances across all of the Use Years that you are able to access for a reservation at that point in time.
