I am considering buying AKL. I just talked with my rep and found out my UY or Month would be December at this point. According to him, this is a "great " month because it would give me all of the following year to plan trips. Again my wife is a teacher and we would be doing most of our traveling on school vacations and summers? Any thoughts... ? Thanks!!

december UY is bad if you travel a lot in sept, oct and nov. if you can cancel an august trip over a month in advance, you'd still have time to bank the pts into the next UY.

dec is not ideal for summer travel, but it's not a dealbreaker IMO. if you prefer, you can hold out for a better UY month and waitlist if necessary.

unless you are concerned about needing to cancel a lot of reservations, though, UY is pretty much a nonfactor...

(BTW, the mods would probably be happier if you kept related questions in one thread.)

If you plan to go every year in Sep, Oct or Nov, Dec is not the best. Otherwise it is fine. Drop down to a thread on this page entitled "DVC Use Year" to learn why the above is correct.

We're in the process of buying into AKV using the current promo. Dec use year wasn't the best for us, so I asked our agent if he could change the UY. He said "no problem" and put us in a March use year. We typically vacation in May or October. This would cover both of those months, plus the summer time period if we end up vacationing while school is out as the kids get older. Plus it puts our 4 month window in Nov, Dec, Jan & Feb. Jan is a fairly slow time, so if we wanted to try a Christmas trip and had to cancel at for some reason, we may have a chance at re-booking during January.

If a different use year would work better for you, just ask your agent to change it for you - ours did!

We have a Dec UY and we travel every year in Oct. I know its not the best if we need to cancel that trip (knock on wood, we have always been able to make our disney trips). I totally forgot about asking about a different UY until after we had sent all the paperwork back and to be honest it really doesn't matter to me. The trips that are more likely to be cancelled are the ones we take in Dec, Jan/Feb and May - the dec UY works well for those. The Oct anniversary trips are pretty much set in stone - and if we have to cancel those later than the end of July, we have bigger issues than losing some DVC points.

We have Dec UY too. It works great for us since most of our trips are taken in March and June. Plus if we wanted to go in Dec, our use year starts again that month. It works out good for us.

We have a Dec UY and have not had any problems. I too work for the school board and travel at spring break every year and then again in the summer or fall. I suppose it could be a problem if you book a November trip and then have to cancel but I'm willing to take that chance. If you have a lot of turmoil or constantly changing work commitments, you might want to reconsider a Dec UY if you vacation in the fall. My work allows me to plan well in advance so I'm happy with it.
