Can someone please explain any pros or cons to a certain month being your use year? If I plan to use my points in June, is it better to have a June or July UY, or does it really make no difference?

I'm sure this has been discussed numerous times on here, but I'm not quite sure where I should look.

TIA :)

If you plan on traveling in June, you ideally would want a use year that is in April or May. This way, if you have to cancel your trip for any reason, you still have time to bank your points.

You want a UY that typically falls right before your usual travel. This allows you a lot of flexlibility in terms of canceling or changing your reservation (at least 31 days out--less than that, the points go in to holding and there are a whole other set of rules).

For June travel, a June UY would be ideal. If you ever think, however, that the June trip may start in late May, then April UY (there is no May) would be best.

This way, if you cancel or change, you are still in the banking window to bank any points. And, if you have borrowed points for the trip and have to cancel, you still have almost the full year to find a way to use them (as borrowed points can be returned to their original UY).

We travel in August, but went with a June UY since we may sometimes travel the last few days of July (which we are this year). Since the other times I would travel would be Xmas time, or February break--I am a teacher--all of these trips fall in a time where I can still bank points if I cancel.

OP there isn't July Use Year ( or November, January or May ).

And note that ONLY CURRENT Use Year points can be banked if your cancellation happens 31 days or more before your check-in date & if you are not past your banking deadline. Current Use Year points are the points from the allotment you would receive during Use Year your trip takes place.
Banking deadline for April UY is November 30 and for June UY January 31.

Points that are part of your reservation that have been banked from previous UY or borrowed from upcoming UY may not be re-banked because points can only be banked once AND Borrowed points can NOT be put back into the UY they were originally from; and so it is helpful to have as much time as possible left in your Use Year to re-utilize any banked & borrowed that were committed to your cancelled reservation.

I'm not sure I understand...

Since I intend to travel in June, I'm better off having a UY of September or October, since that will give me time to reschedule a trip during my UY in case something comes up?

Thank you all for all of your help...the Dis ROCKS!!! :thumbsup2

No, you want a UY that happens just before you typically travel so you are traveling at the beginning of the UY.

If you are a June traveler, than June works out well (unless you could go in May and then I would go with April).

Let's assume an April UY. You want to travel in June 2011. This would happen in your April 2011 UY, which runs from April 1st, 2011 through March 31st, 2012. If you had to cancel that trip, you would still be within your banking window for current UY points (the first 8 months), or still have 9 months left in your UY to reschedule the trip or use up any borrowed/banked points since those would all expire March 31st, 2012.

Now, if you had a Sept UY, your June 2011 travel would be happening in your Sept 2010 UY (Sept 1st, 2010 - August 31st, 2011). If you had to cancel a June trip in this situation after April 30th (but before 31 days prior), you would be beyond your banking window for current UY points so they would have to be used by August 31st, only two months later. Same thing for any banked/borrowed points--you would have only two months to use them before they expire.

Remember, your UY has no affect on when you can call and book a trip. You only have to have the points at the time of travel and not when you call. For June trips, your 11 month window will always be in July. When you call, MS will look at your account, determine which UY you are traveling and then use banked points from the prior UY first, current UY points of time of travel, and borrow any points from the next UY if you need them.
