Thinking of purchasing a small resale contract soon. Wondering how UY affects ability to book at the 11-month window if you are going to need to bank and/or borrow points? Is there somewhere I can go for an education on timeframes for banking and borrowing and booking? Thanks!

But a use year that starts a month or two before your usually planned vacation. That way you cancel without penalty, and will have plenty of time to bank.

UY has nothing to do with the 11 month window. Jan is 11 months before December whether you have a December UY or a June UY.

I have an October UY. I like to travel in November and December. That works out great.

If I had to cancel a stay in November, I'd have many months to make new plans with those points before they expire at the end of the next September. I could even bank current UY pts forward to the next UY.

If I were traveling in September with an October UY and had to cancel, I would risk losing all of the points in that reservation.

Every UY has the same 11 month window. The only difference is what points are going to be eligible to be used but every one will have access to up to 3 years of points.

I start with when will my trip be, then I figure out which points I can use to book that trip. I can always book 11 months before day one of my trip - use year only impacts which points I can use;
For example, say I own 100 points and have a Dec. use year. I want to go to WDW from 11/20 - 11/27/19. My villa will cost 300 points. On 12/20/18 I would make my reservation using points from these use years:
100 points banked from 2017 (runs from 12/1/2017 - 11/30/2018 - I would have already banked these because if I hadn’t they would have expired, if you intend to bank you must do so in the first 8 months of your use year)
100 points from 2018 (runs 12/1/2018 - 11/30/2019)
100 points borrowed from 2019 (runs from 12/1/2019 - 11/30/2020 - I can borrow these at the time I make my reservation)

Thanks so much for this info and the example! So helpful.

Bonus lesson: in the above example, if the trip needs to be cancelled in Sept.... Most likely all 300 points will be lost because they all will expire 11/30/19 and finding availability at 90 days or less is pretty slim.

Yes, there were 2 things I considered when I chose my use year, first when we normally travel, so in the unlikely event we had to cancel we’d have time to use or rent our points, second I knew I’d be adding on so I wanted a fairly popular use year so that I’d have higher odds of finding add on contracts w/ the same use year in the future.

Great summary!
