Hey guys, I am looking for a new lens to go on my Canon 50D and need suggestions/opinions on the following 3 lenses. Canon 10-22mm f3.5-4.5, Canon17-40L f4, and Canon 15-85 f3.5-5.6. Any insight and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I think I know what lenses you might already have in your bag....but it might help to list them so that others can provide some input based on existing equipment. ;)

I went the way of the Canon 10 - 22 mm because of the additional range this lens provided in comparison with the range I already had. I would have been happy to go with the Tokina 11 - 17 mm, f/2.8 as a number of other photographers on the Dis had raved about this lens. But the store didn't have it in stock when I was in the US and I didn't have time to wait for it to be shipped (plus buying the Canon 10 - 22 mm in the US was so much cheaper than buying in Oz).

Thanks Princess, I didn't think to add my other lenses... I have the 50 1.8 and the 70-200 2.8L IS. So none of the 3 overlap the lengths I already have.

How do you like the results from the 10-22?

I have the 10-22 and love it. Of the 3 you listed, it's what I would choose. It's faster than the 17-40, and wider than the 15-85. Don't forget about your camera's crop sensor (on my 7D I think the 10 is really a 16 mm). In my research, I read that some consider the 10-22 as L quality, but is labeled as such.

I quite like it; although I do miss being able to keep the aperture constant at f/3.5 towards the 22 mm end. However, I do have the Canon 17 - 55 mm f/2.8 in my bag, which compensates ;). I haven't yet taken it to a Disney location...which I'm sure will make me wish I'd gone the Tokina route.

But I have taken nights shot using a tripod.
This was taken after I had the lens for less than 2 months, I was happy with the results.

These were taken in July, again with tripod.

You might want to compare it against the Tokina if you like taking night shots and want to have the flexibility of the constant f/2.8 for handheld options. However, I do like the Canon and did have the option to play with the Tamron before I purchased the UWA. I definitely prefer the Canon to the Tamron.

Hope this helps.

I'm envious....the 70 - 200 f/2.8 IS??? I'd love to have that one in my bag.

ps. You're missing the Fall Scav Hunt icon in your collection. You only need to get 5 items on the list to qualify. :thumbsup2

Thanks again Princess. Lovely pictures as always.

And I do have to admit I LOVE the 70-200, I actually carried it all through Disney last December, loved the shots I got but it definitely got heavy. Now I'm trying to find that "perfect" lens for getting the castle, lights, fireworks as well as landscapes and my lightning shots.

If all you have is the 50 and hte 70-200, then I'd go with a fast walk-around lens with more range than you will get with one of the UWA lenses. Like Princess In Oz, I have the Canon 17-55 f/2.8 and love it as well. I'd go that route. The L lenses would be tempting too, but having that constant 2.8 for my walk-around is something I wouldn't give up easily.
