Do you ever put your mail on hold while you are out of town using the USPS online system?

Just curious. I hear from some people you shouldn't halt mail service when you are out of town, but I also don't think that I would feel comfortable just letting it pile up in our box either. I just remembered that we haven't done this for our upcoming trip and I thought I would see what you guys have to say about it.

We always have the mail stopped when we go out of town. When we come back the mail person usually brings us a big crate with the mail in it. I would think having mail pile up in the box/papers in the driveway would scream "hey, we're not home, see if you can get our stuff."

My mom did it when we went on our trip last fall. We picked it up at the post office when we got back.

We have used the online USPS mail hold multiple times with no problem. We usually have it held the day before we leave, just to verify that they got it right.

We put our mail on hold when we are gone. I think it is better then it all over the porch. We have it started again the day we get home and they usually bring a box of mail because there is so much.

Why in the world would someone give this advice? Just curious...

We always use the online mail hold process. Love the convenience compared to the old way of having to go to the PO to fill out and turn in a mail hold card.

We've been holding it using the online form for years, never had a problem! Always been delivered right on time when we got back...

I have a few times, in particular newpapers come by mail where I live and would fill the box after two weekly editions. When the mail won't fit anymore it just creates a hassle for the deliverer anyway.

Always. The only glitch is that occasionally they forget to bring our held mail the day we said we'd be back, but then they always bring it the next day.

Yes we did it online last year and it worked just fine. We always ask friends or family to swing by in the middle of the week just to check on the house and everything as well.

I have used the online mail hold many times and love it! going to the post office is one of my least favorite things. I have never had any problems with it. Yes, you want to either have your mail held or have a trusted friend pick it up every day.

We always have our mail held through the on-line system. We have someone come into our house every other day to feed our sugar gliders (the kennel won't take them with the dogs), but we hated having to ask her to get the mail too especially since she doesn't have to come every day. They deliver it when we return

Seems odd to me, too. I try to remember to stop mine, since I live in a multi-unit building with very small mailboxes. If I forget, I get reprimanded by one of the window clerks after the carrier has stop delivering and hold what won't fit at the post office.

We always put ours on hold via online. It's fast and easy and the mail doesn't take over the box.

I usually set it up about a week in advance to being out of town. We also halt newspaper delivery as well.

I have no idea who told you NOT to do it, but that's some of the worst advice I've ever heard. If you have a normal mailbox(we have a cluster box) then it just screams "out of town" when it starts overflowing.

I travel frequently for work and have it held if I'm gone for more than 3 days. My mailbox is in a spot where it's not noticeible but it overflows after 3 days. I'm going to be away next week and just did the hold online. I'll have it delivered on Friday, I come home Friday evening.

I always hold our mail. I go online and put a hold on our mail each and every trip we take. We live sort of rural but I would hate for any of our mail to be stolen from our box.

It lets the employees at your local PO, who might not be honest, know that you won't be home.

To me....even though I know there have been dishonest PO workers, I can't give a thought to it.

This. We have a bank of mailboxes, though, so it's not like anyone would know whether we're getting it held or not.

My dh and I always have our mail stopped while we are gone. I am not computer smart so I don't trust myself to do it online (although our adult kids do it every time they leave town) I do it the old fashioned way with a big yellow card you can get at the post office. :)
