For those who have set up a wireless connection in your villa, is there anything special that needs to be done in order to connect? TIA

I just bring my router from home, connect it, and it works.

You mean, maybe Computer-challenged me could do it? I've always liked the idea of using wireless at the resort (since I have a router for my laptop at home) but thought "I'd never figure it out." Could I just bring my router from home?

That's what I do. I have Road Runner cable internet through Time-Warner, and the same wireless route works fine at Disney.

Cool, I have Road Runner cable internet with TW too. So I guess once you connect, you will open browser and sign in with room key ?

I bought an inexpensive Netgear wireless router from Best Buy for $35. I plan to use it just for our DVC stays (I have a Cisco Valet at home and it's a bit larger, plus I don't feel like crawling under the desk and disconnecting every time we travel.) I had no problems using the step by step instructions that came with the Netgear router - set it up at BCV earlier this week and now here at BLT. I'm about as computer challenged as they come....if I can do it, you can do it!

Just remember to set up some security or your neighbors will be sharing your wireless connection too. Also, change the default passwords or someone will be reconfiguring your router to suit their needs.

I had not thought about this. But I am just spiteful enough to say the heck with it and both of us could do without internet for the week :rotfl2:

As for the difficulty question if you have a wireless router setup at home just mirror your settings on your travel router. It is then just basically plug and play.

Well, you definitely do not want your neighbor sharing your connection. The router weakens an already poor signal and the wifi weakens it even more so the harder it has to work the worse it gets for you. It may not be a problem if all you are doing is checking email but if your neighbor is streaming live video even checking email could turn into a problem.

The other thing is if your neighbor is on your network and you have file sharing turned on he might be taking a tour of your computer files too.

I see unsecured networks there quite often.

You may not want to mirror your home settings because there could actually be cases where it would keep it from working. However, just about any cheap router will work right out of the box.

That's why I bought an inexpensive one just to use for DVC stays. It's the least expensive Netgear available and the salesman suggested I didn't get a more powerful one - said it would be fine if we were staying in one/two bedroom condos.

I love Netgear. They are my first choice in networking appliances. Linksys is their biggest competitor but I have had nothing but bad experiences with their products. They are buggy and the support for them is lousy. I don't know how the support is for Netgear because since I switched to them I have never had a support issue.

Apple Airport express works great....all in one, no cables or power adapters....its a little expensive, but worth it. Set it up at home with a new PW and your good to go.....

I always travel with my Airport Express. The thing that I have to do to make it work is:

1) Plug the ethernet into my computer.
2) Log on to the Disney system (accept the charges that are waived for DVC members, agree to TOS, etc., get logged onto the web)
3) Unplug the ethernet from the computer.
4) Plug the ethernet into the router.
5) Connect to the router wirelessly.

This usually takes no longer than a few minutes. I wouldn't dare go to a DVC room without my router, as the internet hookups are almost always in extremely inconvenient locations. And I agree -- set up security so your system isn't slowed down by hitchhiking ghosts.

I've never needed to connect the cable to my laptop to log in first.

The best suggestion I have read here is, if you buy a router to take with you, set it up first at home. That way if you have any problems you can work it out with customer service and not loose vacation time and stressed out on vacation. You can have everything set up including your computers when you get there.
