When we drove to Quebec City a few years ago to board our Disney cruise, we used our credit card for most things and US dollars for everything else.
A few of the smaller ports offered school bus tours, local items for sale and food and drink right at the ports and were happily accepting piles of American cash.
The one issue we ran into was at a gas station/rest area where the instructions were in French. My husband stared at the screen for a bit, then went into station and handed the women $20 in US cash and she set the machine to pump that amount. She did not speak English.
We had been to Vancouver before and just assumed all Canadians speak English on the east coast as well! That was not the case in the smaller towns.
