Using RCI weeks for DVC

I hope this is the right forum for this question. If not, please move. :)

I didn't know this until now, but I just learned that DVC is a part of RCI. We have two timeshares, one timeshare in the USVI (we're still on weeks in that timeshare), and one timeshare in the Smokies (that's on points).

How easy is it to exchange for a DVC week with RCI?

I'm thinking impossible for Christmas and Spring Break, and not too good for other times. But is an RCI exchange possible? We're actually looking at several years down the road (2011 or 2012 maybe), and the off-season might even work out better.

As always, many thanks.

I'm hearing it takes a really strong week to pull DVC on the weeks side. The points side is supposed to be a little easier - as long as you don't own a resort in Orlando. There's a regional block for Orlando resorts to trade in.

I look at sitings on the tugbbs boards and I've seen Christmas and New Years weeks posted. So apparently it's not impossible to get a holiday. Seems to be easier with RCI than it was back when DVC was still with II (Interval).

Good luck.

I was able to pull and exchange into a 1 bedroom savanah view at AKV in the new Kidani Village with a check in for March break 2010. I booked it back in June. There were not too many units open for a 1 bedroom or larger at the time. I consider m self very fortunate to be able to enjoy a week at what looks like an incredible resort.

It is possible to trade into DVC through both systems. It does take a top trader on the weeks side and getting a 2 BR is tougher though there is more availability in RCI weeks than RCI points including a number of 1 BR units for next summer. RCI points removes the need for trade power but a gatlinburg week might not have enough points to get even a 1 BR at DVC unless you bank or borrow.

you can't put in a search with points. So, you have to look every daystarting at about 10-11 months out--it's time consuming. A 1 BR is about 70,000 points, studios about 55,000, 2 BR about 110,000. You can find the points values at the online RCI directory. There were a few Christmas and Easter weeks this year--gone in a few hours. More availability throughout the summer on the weeks side. Very little at AKV or BCV, more at SSR and OKW and a sprinkling at VWL and BWV.

We exchanged our timeshare week for a studio at SSR. I was seeing quite a few DVC available after the RCI website upgrade but recently I can't see any.

GL!

My in-laws have RCI points and suggested that maybe we use their points for our family Dec 2010 trip instead of our DVC points. They called and asked for sample points and were told 92,500 for a two bedroom at OKW in January, as example. But RCI said it would have to be for a whole week at WDW, not just days. My question is, can the week be a Tues to Monday of the next week or does a week have to be Sun-Sat or some other combination?
My plan is to book in January for our Dec trip using my points. Then if my in-laws can book in Feb-May (end of my banking window) sometme using their points, I'll just cancel my DVC reservation and get my points banked instead.

It doesn't have to be for an entire week however the chances of getting a reservation for less than a week have seemed to be non existent so far. I have seen OKW for rent but not for exchange though honestly I don't normally look for less than a week for Orlando. The points are anywhere from roughly 70K to 115K for a 2 BR at OKW for Dec depending on when and the more in demand resorts are just a few K more. If you want it, get the entire week. The chances of finding a 2 BR for Dec are not that good so I wouldn't try to complicate matter by trying to get a shorter time for less points. If they don't have enough points for the 2 BR for the week, I'd just look at not using RCI points or staying off property.

If you could find less than a week it could be anything but realistically weeks normally start on Fri Sat or Sun so assume 3 days starting on a weekend and 4 days ending on a weekend.

For OKW they are either 69,500, 92,500 or 115,500 depending on time of year. If you assume anything Dream, Magic or Premier is 115K and most of adventure is the 69.5K, you'll be pretty close. NONE of Dec or Jan is the middle level though, don't know what they were thinking on that one.

they have enough points for an entire week, but we want the week to run from Tuesday night through Monday night as that is what is convenient for us for travel time. A full week that starts on a weekend night won't work for our timing.

While theoretically DVC can deposit a week that starts any day, realistically I do not know of this ever happening. The only way you'd have any chance would be if there were 2 back to back weeks AND DVC had given them the OK to book for less than a week. Your only real chance would be to get 2 weeks at one time which might be possible for one exchange fee if both weeks were there at one time.
