I will be closing on my resale of 240 points at the Boardwalk next week and I plan to stay at the Polynesian next year. I plan to alternate every year between the Polynesian and the Boardwalk. It does not seem like many people do that and I wonder why most people stay at their home base and not take advantage of the fact that they can stay at the Grand Floridian or Contemporary etc. I also wonder what kind of room I will be getting when I do stay at one of these hotels.

Hi ninap,
The reason most stated on the board for not using your points at "other resorts" is efficiency. You get the most bang for your buck when you use the DVC resorts as the accommodations include some kind of kitchen facility, whereas at the Poly you don't get the microwave/refrig combo as in the DVC studio. But if this trade fits you, then GO FOR IT! And, by the way, Welcome to the board! I'm in Central MA and have found this board and all the other DIS boards to be a great help in trip planning and saving money. :)

The only reason I initially joined was because I knew that I could return to the Poly which had always been my favorite. However once I stayed at the BW , I was hooked and have never looked back. The same points usually get you either a hotel room at the Poly or a 1 bedroom at the BW and there is no comparison. Welcome to the Club...

The BW gives you so much more room then the Poly that it will be hard to return to the Poly..

A week at the Polynesian in May is 260 points. All you are guaranteed is a standard view room. A week at the Boardwalk in May (standard view) is 107 for a studio, 210 for a 1 bedroom, 286 for a 2 bedroom. You could get 2 studios at BW for less points than 1 room at the Polynesian. A 1 bedroom at BW is 50 points less and you get a living room, fully equipped kitchen, jacuzzi, twice the space.

I can understand trading out to another resort for a special ocassion because you really want to stay there, but I wouldn't do it on a regular basis. I agree that once you stay in a 1 bedroom villa, you willn't want a regular hotel room.

Our first stay on property was at the Poly in '89. When we joined DVC in '92, we intended to go back to the Poly now and then because we liked it so much. So far, we haven't. All the above reasons are part of it. In addition, when we want a Poly "fix", we can go over for an afternoon or evening, eat, pool hop, shop, ride the monorail, watch the Electrical Water Pageant... in short, do everything except sleep there.

Going to OKW May 19-30 and Dec 8-19 :)

Another reason is that while points for DVC resorts can not go up over time, even if the cash price for nights at the DVC resorts rises, the points for exchanges into Disney hotels can and have increased as Disney raises their cash prices.

I too love the poly.

Ninap,
Like the rest above, I agree about getting more bang for your buck with the DVC properties, but We recently traded into the Poly. for one of our relatives. He had tried every resort except the Poly, and wanted to try it. They gave him a great room, facing MK/beach, on the first floor. They loved it. We first bought in Nov , years back. They gave us points for that year and the next. We used the extra points to try the Grand Floridian. We got two rooms right by the pool. We had a great time. It's hard to give up the jacuzzi, washer and dryer, and all the extra space in the villas though.Enjoy.

Ditto to most of the replies. We stayed at the Poly five consecutive summer vacations before buying at OKW. We also get our annual Poly fix by visiting, dining, shopping, etc. Still a wonderful resort but OKW spoiled us.

I would rather stay in accomodations that are larger than some people's homes, be able to relax and lounge around in a one or 2 bedroom unit and not have to worry about coming back to a room and FORCING everyone to have lights out, If I want to hng out and watch TV in the living room and eat a snack I can while other people in my family can sleep in their own rooms.

When you're in a hotel room or studio, everyone only has a bed for when they come back to the room, in my accomodations I can go to my own room, I can go sit out on the porch at the table and chairs, I can whip up something in the kitchen to snack on, and hangout in the living room or go next door into my kids room and hang out with them.i

Ninap, one other thing. When I called for the Poly. Resv. The woman at member services was great! I asked what was the chance to get a nice view. She said," already making sure of it". So, to answer your question, We were very happy with our resv. at the Poly, and Gf.

I had the same questions and concerns about using my points at resorts other than DVC, but this year as a special event, we are using points to stay at AKL shortly after it opens. I figured that I am already paying for the points, I may as well use them, and I wouldn't want to pay the extra $$$ for deluxe room as long as I've paid DVC dues. I think I will use points at a deluxe every 2-3 years, just for a change if I need one. Last trip to BWV was disappointing. Resort was in bad need of repairs/refurbishment, which I understand they are doing now. Also, got kinda tired of the hustle bustle of the boardwalk. Next time I stay there, will request a room far from the bw. Have had bw view past two years. Too much stimulation!
