Okay, I'm very new to this, and I know this has probably been answer a dozen or more times, but I cannot find the answer to this anywhere else! Can you use points, or rent DVC points to stay at a resort on Disney property other than the DVC resorts? If so, how do you know how many points it takes for each resort? How would I go about doing this (if it is possible)? I'm sorry for all of the questions! DH and I were hoping to go down the week of 12/5-12/12/09 for a birthday/Christmas celebration (just the two of us). I have been waiting to buy tickets to the MVMCP for us because we don't have our room dates set yet. I would very much welcome and appreciate the help!!! TIA

DVC points can be used to book moderate and deluxe resorts at WDW (and Fort Wilderness Resort cabins & campsites). But the points required to do so are very high whereas using points at a DVC resort is a better option and in most cases the accommodations are superior to even deluxe resorts - -

for December depending upon night of week & room type/view & the particular resort that would be approx 17 - 47 points per night at moderate resorts and 37 - 150 points per night at a deluxe resort. And there is $95 fee for booking at non-DVC resorts and any changes to the reservation will result in another $95 fee. You can probably do much better booking a regular cash reservation through Disney's Central Reservations and may even be able to get an attractive package or room discount ( check AAA as well & Annual Pass holders are usually eligible for room discounts ) if you are interested in resorts at WDW that are not DVC .

I'm not sure if I've misread your post but I think you are looking to rent points from a DVC member ? if so what you are doing is actually renting a reservation from that member - the member needs to make all the arrangements for you and controls the reservation until the point you check-in so you have to establish that you trust this member too. Also, many members have a policy of no refunds and this probably will be especially true if you want non-DVC resort because if the reservation is cancelled they cannot reuse those points to book at a DVC resort & there will be restrictions to how the member can reuse the points which most members do not want to deal with,

Average amount points rent at is around $11 per pt depending upon member, resort...a number of factors can determine how the member decides on pricing. If this is what you are interested in doing go to Rent/Trade board and read stickies at top to understand the process.
It makes much more $ sense to book at DVC resorts rather than non-DVC resorts at WDW when using points.

:)

While it's possible to make a reservation at some of the non-DVC resorts with points (GF, Poly, YC, FW and moderates), as a renter, you'll probably pay a lot more than you would be simply booking a cash reservation through CRO. This is because it would require an exchange out of the DVC system, there are fees involved for that, and the point values are extremely high.

The value for DVC members (and therefore, renters), is in the use of the DVC resorts. As a renter, you can save a bundle getting a reservation for a DVC resort through a member. That doesn't hold true for the non-DVC resorts.

As was stated by PP's, DVC points are best used at DVC resorts but if you did want to rent points to stay at DVC resort, you should know that all of December is a busy time for DVC properties. The availability may be limited. At this "late" date, probably the best choice is via CRO.

One more tip. If you rent a reservation from a member, you will not be eligible for free dining. You can only get free dining through DRC (Disney Reservations Center) and purchasing a full package from them.

Thank you to everyone for the help and information. We have looked into renting points at the DVC resorts for Dec of this year and have found that there is nothing available. I was just curious as to the points being used for another Disney property resort. We have talked about DVC for a few years and have considered renting points in the past. It was just something we were hoping to do this trip, but now we are thinking of just going through Disney as we usually do. Thanks again!
