DVC points can be used to book moderate and deluxe resorts at WDW (and Fort Wilderness Resort cabins & campsites). But the points required to do so are very high whereas using points at a DVC resort is a better option and in most cases the accommodations are superior to even deluxe resorts - -
for December depending upon night of week & room type/view & the particular resort that would be approx 17 - 47 points per night at moderate resorts and 37 - 150 points per night at a deluxe resort. And there is $95 fee for booking at non-DVC resorts and any changes to the reservation will result in another $95 fee. You can probably do much better booking a regular cash reservation through Disney's Central Reservations and may even be able to get an attractive package or room discount ( check
AAA as well & Annual Pass holders are usually eligible for room discounts ) if you are interested in resorts at WDW that are not DVC .
I'm not sure if I've misread your post but I think you are looking to rent points from a DVC member ? if so what you are doing is actually renting a reservation from that member - the member needs to make all the arrangements for you and controls the reservation until the point you check-in so you have to establish that you trust this member too. Also, many members have a policy of no refunds and this probably will be especially true if you want non-DVC resort because if the reservation is cancelled they cannot reuse those points to book at a DVC resort & there will be restrictions to how the member can reuse the points which most members do not want to deal with,
Average amount points rent at is around $11 per pt depending upon member, resort...a number of factors can determine how the member decides on pricing. If this is what you are interested in doing go to Rent/Trade board and read stickies at top to understand the process.
It makes much more $ sense to book at DVC resorts rather than non-DVC resorts at WDW when using points.
