Using points for WL Cabins

Hi everybody,

Can we use points for renting some sort of cabin in the Fort Wilderness and if so what does it cost points wise. Another question are they good accomodation and how many people can stay in them.
Info on the Cabins would be of use thanks.

We loved the cabins, although they are much more expensive pt wise then staying in DVC. There is a double bed and bunk beds in the bedroom along w/ a pull down double bed in the living room. They are absolutely beautiful, and the area is very nice and quiet. We were w/ our DD who was not quiet two at the time. She loved being able to walk up and down the street. They also have great decks w/ a picnic table and grille right outside your door. transportation is great to MK but you must bus it to the other parks. They have Chip N' Dale sing alongs at nite w/ a campfire and movie. Rent a golf cart if you can, they are alot of fun.

The cabins are nice, in a heavily wooded area and a very spread out resort. However, I personally would not use points on one unless no DVC resort was available. The points needed during "magic" season (mid-Feb to mid-Aug excluding the two Easter weeks which are higher) are 34 Sun to Thurs and 68 Fri and Sat. That is is higher than a BWV 1BR (preferred view) or VWL 1BR (both 30/60) and greatly higher than a 1BR at OKW (22/54). But the cabin at 504 sg ft is substantially smaller than those 1BR's (about 714 sg ft at VWL and BWV and over 1000 at OKW). All of the DVC units are far superior to the cabins (and include a w/d that the cabins do not). The VWL units capture a similar atmosphere in the woods and the VWL units are actually no further away from the center of activity at the Pioneer Hall area in FW than the FW cabins are. In other words, if you want FW for its camp style like activities (hay rides, outdoor barbecue, etc.) it is just as easy to get to those activities from VWL (a bus runs between VWL and the FW activity center) as from the cabins (for which you also have to take a bus to the FW activity center that covers about the same distance). Also, the FW transportation system is poor as you need to take 3 different transport systems to get to MGM or Epcot (3 busses to MGM and two busses and a monorail to Epcot); all the DVC resorts have single transport to any park.

We were also thinking about doing this but for a difference of only 17 points over the dream season, you can get a 2 bedroomed at OKW.

One other thing to look at though is the size of your party. A one-bedroom at DVC sleeps 4. A Ft. Wilderness cabin sleeps 6. So even though the points are greater, if you have a larger party (5 or 6 people) you would have to compare the point value of a cabin to a 2-bedroom at DVC.

We stayed at the FW homes on our very first trip to WDW in 1994. We liked the accommodations very much but found the transportation awkward. We used our car to go everywhere except MK.

However, note that the 2BR/FW difference is seasonal. A 2BR at OKW actually costs fewer points for a week (296) than a FW cabin (306) during "magic" season (which covers about half the year) and BWV standard view 2BR is the same number as FW for that period..
