I was reading in someone's trippie that you can use an existing ticket to upgrade to an AP. She said she used undercover tourist and saved $$$$. Can someone explain that to me?

Any Magic Your Way tickets can be upgraded within 14 days of their first use, and they can be upgraded to any higher value ticket, including annual passes. Note that you can only upgrade to a higher value ticket, though... if you have a ticket worth more than the annual pass then you can still get an annual pass, but you won't get any refund.

Because of an odd Disney ticketing rule, you'll get credit for the full gate price of any ticket that has been used before you do the upgrade... even if you originally bought the ticket at a discount.

So, the trick is to find a discounted ticket that has a gate value of less than the price of the annual pass that you want, but still has a big discount. Then, you use that ticket once to enter a park to bring it's value up to gate price and go to guest relations and upgrade it to an annual pass.

For example, an adult DVC annual pass normally costs $414.29 (including tax). You can also get an 8 day ticket with the water parks and hopper options from undercover tourist (with the mousesavers discount) for $335.95. When you use that ticket once to bring it up to gate value it will be worth $363.17. So you can upgrade that ticket to a DVC annual pass for $51.12 (the AP cost of $414.29 minus the gate price of your ticket of $363.17). In the end you'll have paid $387.07($335.95 to undercover tourist and $51.12 to Disney) for your annual pass, or a savings of $27.22.

It's a bit of a process, but if you have a whole family to get AP's for you can save $100 or more among all the AP's.

Does anybody know if this applies to tickets that are part of a vacation package?? We have the UK 14 DAY ultimate ticket for the price of a seven day ticket as part of a package and would certainly upgrade to an AP wich would cover next years vacation at a considerable discount.

It definitely does apply to tickets purchased as part of a package, however, unfortunately I have no idea how this would apply to the special UK tickets. I did a quick google search and found several people saying it can be done and an equal number of people saying it cannot be done. Your best bet might be to call Disney Ticketing at 407-566-4985, option 2.

Cheshire Figment might come across this thread and be able to provide some insight as well too.

No, unfortunately these tickets are NOT upgradeable. A general rule to remember is that if the ticket isn't sold at park gates, it isn't upgradeable.
From Cheshire Figment's admission information thread:

14 or 21 Day Ultimate Park Hopper. These are valid for unlimited entry for one person to all the parks, both major and minor, for either 14 or 21 days from first use. They are sold by Disney in the United Kingdom and Ireland. They can be ordered through www.disney.co.uk but will not be shipped to the United States or Canada. People have been known to contact friends, relations or travel agents who can purchase these tickets and then have them shipped to them in the US. These cannot be upgraded.
