I asked this on another forum and only got one reply so I thought I'd ask here too, in the hope somebody might know the answers.

Firstly, if I want to phone somebody else on a UK mobile, from a UK mobile, but whilst we are BOTH in WDW do I just dial her normal number or do I need to use some kind of country code?

Secondly, if I want to phone a local restaurant from my mobile, would I need to dial the country code as I would if I were ringing from the UK? For example, we want to phone ahead to Manny's when we leave Busch so I need to know which number I need to call from my mobile.

Hope somebody knows as we can't seem to work it out between us all :confused3

I *think* you need to dial the country code in both cases. You need to enter it as +44 or +1 into your phone.

Remember to drop the leading zero of the mobile.

DH will know for certain and I will to remember and ask him tonight for you :thumbsup2

To dial your friend's mobile you need to put in the country code for the UK +44.

To dial anything local you need to put in the country code for the US - whatever that is.

Definatly need the country codes we used our mobiles last trip and for a while could only text until we changed all numbers to the +44 format.
I have to say I was pleasently surprised at my phone bill too it really wasnt anywhere near as expensive as I first thought!

So for texts we can just use our mobile numbers as they are (starting 07)?

Do you remember how much a text cost you?

We did yes.
Our theory was for texts the phone changes it to the +44 format automatically! I am no expert so could be wrong but it was certaintly the case for us we could text without changing anything but to phone we had change it manually first!!

Anybody who is on O2 can dial UK numbers just as if they were in the UK:

In the USA our local network partners support O2’s Home from Home service so you can make a call or send a text with your O2 mobile just like you do in the UK.
You can dial numbers programmed in your phone to make a call
Just call 901 to listen to your voicemail.
Remember though that you will need to use the international prefix (+1) to make a call to a phone in the US or Canada.
You will need to use the full international format to call any other country.

Have remembered to ask DH is usually the font of all things techy - and his answer was it depends on the phone you are using!

So he said try it one way and if does work do it the other :thumbsup2

Simplest thing to do is always store the phone numbers with the + country code. It doesn't cost anymore if your in the country your calling. In other words if you're in the Uk and dial +44 1234 56789 it's the exact same as dialing 01234 56789.

I'm probably getting old but how did we survive before mobile phones ? It's a wonder we are not extinct by now :)

Keith, I never, ever normally take a mobile phone (and if I do, it normally stays in the safe for the duration of the holiday). That's why I'm so completely clueless as to how to use it abroad. Trouble is, we are such a large group this time that we really need to call ahead to get a table at a couple of the restaurants we're going to otherwise we won't get in. And I need to be able to call our friends if we lose them on the way ;)

Thank you everyone for all the advice. I have programmed Manny's number into my phone using the 001 prefix and Tee's number I have put the +44 in front and I guess we will see if it works. If not, I'll try trial and error.

just remember it'll be massively expensive. i used my blackberry in orlando, and although most of the time i had it in flight mode, and only used Blackberry messenger a few times to meet up with my friend, my bill went from the usual £20 to £120! and i barely used it! i used wifi a few times in free wifi hotspots but man.. expensive.

I am on PAYG anyway and will not be using roaming - we have free internet in the rooms and have bought a travel wi-fi router so will use that if I need ot do anything. As i said earlier, I am not a slave to my mobile phone and it will probably remain in the safe for the majority of the time we are there anyway.
