Using membership question

I have a quick question that I hope someone here can give me an answer to.

We purchased DVC last summer and just had our first amazing trip at Poly. Now we are planning our next trip and want to make sure we have our points correct.

We have a USE YEAR of DECEMBER. We currently have 206 points banked of a 135 point contract. So correct me if I'm wrong, but won't we get an additional 135 pts this December? That will make our point total 341.

We are wanting to take 9 nights starting June 1 at Poly. That will cost 198 points, leaving 143 points. Does that mean we will effectively lose 8 points if we do not use them before December 2017?

Please, if I'm wrong on any of this info correct me. That is why I'm asking. Thanks!

With a 135 point contract, you cannot possibly have 206 points banked into a single year. It sounds like you may have some Dec 2014 points banked into your Dec 2015 use year. If so those must be used for a trip that ends no later than Nov 30, 2016. Then, if you also have points from your Dec 2015 year banked into your Dec 2016 year (and the maximum that could be is 135 points) then those can be used with the 135 Dec 2016 points to book any trip between Dec 1, 2016 and Nov 30, 2017. Moreover, you can reserve a June 2017 trip at your home resort in July 2016 and use those points at that time.

And, yes, any points banked into the Dec 2016 use year must be used for a trip that ends no later than Nov 30, 2017.

Yeah, when we bought the contract that let us bank the 2014 points as a one time thing, even though it was past the banking time.

But we used 199 points in June. So what points are we going to lose if we don't use them?

Hmmm. Im still somewhat of a DVC newbie but I'm reading that as you will receive 135 points on Dec 1 for your 2016 allotment. You already have 71 points banked into your Dec 2016 use year, plus the 135 you will receive, making 206 available to use from Dec 1, 2016-Nov 30, 2017. Since 71 were already banked, you need to use them by Nov 30, 2017 or you will lose them. You can still bank the 135 points into your Dec 2017 use year if you aren't going to use them all.

So if you were to use 198 points for your June 2017 Poly trip, you will have 8 remaining points you could bank into the Dec 2017 use year

That's how I was understanding it as well. But I'm new as well. We are pretty screwed if it is the other way.

That shows that you banked 71 2015 points into your 2016 UY. Add the 71 to the 135 points in your 2016 UY and you have the 206 points that are showing to be used for stays anytime from Dec 1, 2016 thru Nov 30, 2017.

You also have 135 points remaining in your 2017 UY which you could borrow into your 2016 UY of necessary. The 71 banked points need to be used for a stay by Nov 30, 2017 or you will lose them. The 135 points that are current points from you 2016 UY can either be used before the Nov 30, 2017 date or else you could bank them into your 2017 UY. You also could borrow the 135 back into your 2015 UY if you decided on a stay sometime between now and Nov 30, 2016. Your banking deadline for those points would be July 31, 2017.

So, you would use the 71 banked points plus 127 of the 2016 points for the June 2017 stay. You will have 8 points to bank into your 2017 UY.

December use years can be difficult to understand. Your 2015 use year only includes one month in 2015, and 11 months in 2016.

You don't "get" points on December 1st. You've always had those points, and they reflect in your account at all times. Those points are simply restricted for use during your use year (with banking and borrowing rules that allow them to be moved one year forward or back).

A trip in June 2017 is in your 2016 use year. You have 206 points available for that trip. That will leave you with 8 points in your 2016 use year, not 143. Those 8 points can be banked into 2017, leaving them with an expiration of 11/30/2018.

The Dec 2014 points were banked into the Dec 2015 and you used all of those for the June 2016 trip plus 64 Dec 2015 points. That left 71 points in your Dec 2015 use year which you banked into your Dec 2016 use year, and thus you have a total of 206 points in your Dec 2016 use year. Those 71 can be used with the 135 Dec 2016 points to reserve next June and since you want June 1, you can make that reservation now if you own at Poly. When you do that 198 point reservation, the system will use the 71 banked points first and also 127 of your Dec 2016 points -- the online system is designed to use banked points first, and if you instead call to make the reservation, MS will also use the banked points first. That will leave 8 Dec 2016 points that you can then bank into the Dec 2017 use year as long as you do the act of banking by July 31, 2017.

We're about to make that reservation for June 2017 now.
