using Formula checks

Typically when I was using formula and the checks the check would be in the person's name, which is why you need to endorse it...not the store. We would get them in my name, my husband's name and my mother's name, so each would be endorsed appropriately.

you don't endorse the checks. By doing that they are now worthless to the store. They are supposed to be processed as a coupon but deposited as a check. They even say it on the check.

Your Walmart was just being stupid. They may have thought they were WIC checks and AFAIK you do sign those in front of the cashier.

Really...what difference does it make to you if they asked you to sign the check and now it may be useless to them? When I have used the checks every place is different, every place gets confused, every place looks at me like I have 10 heads...some say sign, some say don't sign, some do it as a coupon, some as a check, some a line item discount because they can't figure it out. To me...I could care less, just take the money off and I will be on my merry way.
