How many members out there have tried this option? Did you find you could target a given location and travel at the time of year you desired, or did you need to settle for a non-preferred time? Where have you traveled to and were the accomodations up to Disney quality? I am thinking about a DVC membership and wanted to know from some fellow members if I plan on using 50% of my vacations in the World Passport Collection, is it worth joining or should I consider something from Marriot?

If you can afford it, you might consider both. Get just enough DVC points to use every other year, and do the same for Marriott.

With advance planning it's possible to buy only DVC, trade out and get good dates at a good resort, and this is a perfectly good way to go if you view DVC as a prepaid vacation plan. But if you really want to maximize your dollar per point you should use DVC points only at DVC, where they realize the most value.

That said, we're using DVC points to go to Hawaii next March. (We started over a year ahead of time, and got our first-choice time period and one of our first-choice locations.) While it will cost us a bit more than it would cost if we went to the trouble of maintaining a second timeshare or of renting our DVC points and using the cash for a rented condo or rented timeshare in Hawaii, it will also cost us a great deal less than a first-class hotel suite. For us, the simplicity of using Member Services has a value, too.
