using debit card for car rental

Which car rental agencies accept debit (not credit) cards?

We're renting with Alamo and plan to use a debit card. I know you have to have proof of return flight. I think that other places that will take a debit card require a deposit. Also I'm assuming that you mean a debit card with either the Visa or Master card logo. Hope this helps.

You will have to check and see what each company's individual policy is regarding Debit cards as some just require a return flight ticket as proof that you'll return (Alamo), others will hold a deposit until you return the car and others just hold the actual amount of the rental and others do a credit check and require a deposit.

I believe Alamo and Budget will accept debit cards without a credit check.

Hertz allows debit cards if you are a member of one of their clubs. The card has to be in your profile. There are sights where you can get free memberships. They hold the amount of the rental and up to $50 more. I do this all the time all over the country with no problems.

I read an articile not too long ago that said some rental car companies are doing credit checks when you rent with a debit card. These checks appear as if you are trying to buy a car and could count against you later. I know Dollar was one, but I can't recall the other details. I would ask prior to giving my debit card!
