Using Banked Points versus Current Year

I am trying to plan my initial use of my points. Need some clarification. I have 160/15 and 160/16 points. My UY is August. I have until 3/31/16 to have either made reservations and or banked a combination of 160 points for the 2015 points. Correct?

If I bank the points prior to 3/31 and then make a reservation prior to August, what points will be used?

If I bank the points prior to 3/31 and then make a reservation after August, what points will be used?

If the reservation begins and ends prior to 8/1/2016, you would have to borrow 2016 use year points to make the reservation. If the reservation begins after 8/1/2016, the points that were banked from 2015 should be used first.

To clarify you don't actually have to make a reservation prior to your banking deadline if you are going to reserve at a DVC resort or at a DL hotel. You could make a reservation for a stay anytime prior to Juy 31st using your 2015 points and you could actually book that reservation up until the day before if you wished to although that would not be a normal thing to do. But if you're not set on a stay prior to Aug it's best to bank the points and then borrow 2016 points if you change your mind and wish to go prior to Aug 1st.

keep in mind that once you bank OR borrow points to a new UY, that banking or borrowing cannot be undone for those points. (so be SURE...)

The order that points are supposed to be used are banked, borrowed, transferred, regular. The reservation software is designed to force that order for online and MS reservations depending on which contracts are selected, (if you own more than one). MS has to select the contracts just like we do online but if they select the wrong ones you could have regular points used while having banked or borrowed left over.

I have an April Use Year. We vacation annually in October, booking BCV at 11 months. With an April Use Year I must bank unused points by the end on November.
I always banked way in advance of November believing if we added another trip prior to receiving new Use Year points the banked points would be used first - like in Bill's example
Have I been wrong? I do it so I won't forget and I didn't think there was any risk

If you bank your points and then add a trip before April, then you'll have no points for that trip. You'll have to borrow from next year.

Once you bank them into the next UY they will stay there and could not be used for a reservation prior to the start of that next UY. If you had already banked them then the only option would be to borrow points.

If you bank early the 2015 points become 2016 points. You now have zero 2015 points but you have the banked 2016 points and any left over 2016 regular points.
