Can anyone tell me a reputable place to return used cell phones to? I have several that I, my husband and kids have used, but we've gotten newer phones. I was hoping there was a place to return them and maybe get a little cash back.

Thanks for any suggestions.

My Verizon store will collect them and donate them to a women's shelter.

Thanks everyone! I didn't know they could be donated for soldiers or even shelters. Very good ideas!

What type of phones do you have?
Are they still useable?
Would you be willing to sell them?

I was excited when I saw this thread and was going to post the cell phone for soldiers link lol I have been getting a postage-paid mailer for the program every time I order from Cabellas.

I have also donated to women's shelters - they don't activate them, they give them to women in bad situations because 911 works even without activation - here's another idea.. you can give them to an elderly person to keep charged and in their pocket in case they are alone and fall or something, they could call 911.

Here is a link to Verizon's national Hopeline Phone Recycling program that donates phones to victims of domestic violence.

Verizon's Hopeline Phone Recycling Program

"The long-running HopeLine program collects no-longer-used wireless phones and equipment in any condition from any service provider. The used phones are either refurbished or recycled. With the funds raised from the sale of the refurbished phones, Verizon Wireless donates wireless phones and airtime to victims, and provides funding and other contributions to non-profit domestic violence shelters and prevention programs across the country."

To mail in your old phone(s) to the program, you can print the free postage-paid label, to affix to a box/envelope and simply drop it in the mail. :dance3:

Save some money for yourself and also possibly save a life!

See if your service provider has a return program. We have Sprint and they will take back certain phones & give you a credit on your bill. I returned my old phone to them a few months ago and got a $25 credit.

Depending on how old your phones are, Best Buy will pay you to trade them in. I'm trading in two phones (they like to freeze up constantly, so I would feel bad giving them to a shelter or soldier) and will be getting $120 in Best Buy gift cards...

It also might not be a bad idea to hang on to at least one of them just in case something happens to your new one. My DH accidentally dropped his in the toilet (DON'T ASK!! :confused3) and since water damage wasn't covered on his warranty, we were able to activate his old one instead of spending all that money on a new one.

While not as helpful as women's shelters or soldiers, swagbucks will recycle phones and deposit swagbucks into your account for them.

Oh- I truly thought I was the only person who ever dropped their cell phone in the toilet (hey- I only did it once!!)

Side note: the donations to "cell phones for soldiers" can be a phone in any state of disrepair- they send them to a company who fixes them or uses them for parts, so the phones can be working, broken or somewhere in between.
