My question, for our next trip I was thinking about something a little different for my daughter. On ebay there is a seller that sells used (and some new) Disney surplus. Sometimes they have cast member clothing, shirts, vests, hats, jackets, etc. Thought it might be neat to get something like that for my daughter to wear on our trip and at the park, she's 7 and says she has 4 careers she wants to pursue, a firefighter at WDW, a Chef @ Chef Mickey's, a veterinarian at AK, and an animal trainer at AK, gotta love it. Mom & Dad would definitely visit her a lot

My question/concern. Not that a 7 yr old would be trying to pass herself off as a cast member, but do they have any kind of policy regarding this? I'd hate to get to the park in the morning only to be told we can't go in because of what she is wearing. Any ideas about this, thanks.

An ex employee said she should be fine since it is only adults (people who look like employees) that they are worred about.

I bought my son a monorail pilot pin off ebay a couple years ago and when he wore it to Disney, a monorail driver told us to have him remove it or he would call security. He was 12.

Since most clothing on Ebay is stolen (cast members take costumes) I would say no. Even if it is a 7 year old. A pin, maybe, but definatly not a costume.

I don't get it, how would a cast member's costume fit a 7 year old? Aren't all cast members adults?

I think we all know who the seller is that the OP was talking about. I do not think he steals. Not that some don't but the seller that I am thinking of sells actual ride cars and pieces of DL & WDW. I don't think he would be allowed to sell them if there was a problem.

I didn't mean that the OP steals things at all! Sorry if it sounded that way! I can tell you for sure that many of the costumes sold on Ebay are not condoned by Disney. Mouse Surplus is I think the only one that Disney contracts with.

Just FYI - cast members who "forget" to turn in costumes are charged for them. They can not be classified as stolen if paid for. Some costumes (ToT comes to mind) cost substantially more than others. My son had to sign an agreement at the start of his CP stating that he was aware of the policy. As he's one who forgets to turn in uniforms I'm happy he's got a relatively cheap "costume"

About the 12 year old and the monorail driver pin...now I don't know if the pin was part of the costume or something to trade, but if it was part of the *costume*, then the 12 year old being asked to remove it makes sense. From wdwinfo.com, in the section about dress codes:

~Adult costumes or clothing that can be viewed as a costume (children under age 10 are excluded)

Over 10 are charged as adults for admission, so it seems the clothing for 10 and up also follows the adult rules.

And to me that makes sense. It's a rare 9 year old that looks like an adult, but at some point in there, SOME kids start some serious growth, and I'd hate to be the one coming up with some OTHER way to keep kids that look like adults from wearing costumes, when others their age can because they look younger... So the 10 year old cutoff makes sense, when you start thinking about all the other difficulties that could happen if they had a different system.

Makes sense to me, at least.

I wasn't talking about the OP stealing and I didn't think that is what you meant either. Mouse surplus sell cast member costumes. There quite a few on there 2 weeks ago.

I can't imagine that Disney is selling real costumes. I worked there for 2 semesters and the way it works is every day you go to their laundry and pick up your costume for the day. I never washed a thing, hence I never wore one home to have the op. to steal it. The guard at the gate would stop you if you were walking out with a costume. You sign for your clothes every day so even if you were to stuff it in a duffle bag you are still accountable for it.

I don't think Disney would sell them either. Seems way to risky a security thing given how the world is today, and they would not make that much profit off of used closed. IMO whoever is selling it is telling you that to jack up the price.

I do not know anything about working in the parks. All I know is that there is a seller on ebay that sells everything from furniture from the resorts to signs from the actual parks and Cast Member costumes. I do believe he is contracted through Disney (someone correct me if I am wrong) so I do believe all his items are legit.

CM's bring their costumes home, they are limited to a certain amount depending on their shifts, PT/FT, etc. Not all roles require that you report to a laundry, etc. This would be a nightmare considering there are 70,000+ CM's.

The ones on Mouse Surplus maybe costumes that are no longer being used, example, the costume type/design has changed. Just a thought.

I've seen several Cast Members out and about in their costumes in Walgreen and in Publix just doing regular shopping after work. Kind of kills the magic but 'eh, what are you going to do? :) They have a life to live too.

I wouldn't risk it, you never know with DIsney some people say yes and some say no. You could get away with it on one day and the next it's a no go. KWIM?

Things have changed sinice I last worked there (91 & 93). If you got caught walking in the wrong land with your costume on you would be in deep trouble. Showing up in a wallmart? :confused3: CMs at MGM are allowed to because it is supposed to be a movie set (part of the theme, I worked Star Tours back when it was the only thrill ride there).

No one during normal hours back than was allowed to take a costume home for the reason I already stated and also for appearance. Some people are slobs (like me) and would not clean and iron the thing every day (clean, yes... iron prob not. I was 18). The only "costume" I knew of that was not washed by the laundry were from people who worked nights fixing the park. Gardner "costumes" aren't really what people think of when they think of Disney.

I have noticed with my past visits the customer service isn't what it was since I worked there. Or maybe I am just an old guy who is remembering the "good ole days":scared1:

The three times I saw people in their costumes (crazy that I can remember that it was 3 different times but I guess it made an impression) was two different times in Walgreen's they were (I think) parking attendants with the bright yellow pants and yellow and white striped shirt. One time it was a boy and the other time it was a girl. And then the other time I saw a cast member was in Publix. She was a girl w/ the MGM costume on, as you mentioned. You know, the long pastel striped dress made out of Seer Sucker material.

On our last trip (Sept 06), I saw Photo Pass employees wearing their uniforms driving in along side us, parking their car in a special area towards the front of the lot, and walking in to the gates. I noticed it because I thought CM's reported to the costume dept to get dressed at the start of their shift and changed back into their regular clothes at the end of their shift. I guess not all of them do though. :confused3

At Disneyland, we were not allowed to remove any part of our costumes from the park whatsoever. We had a wardrobe dept and after (or before) each shift, we had to exchange soiled custume pieces for freshly laundered and pressed items. If we lost our name badge, we had to use a replacement (no matter what the name was) or pay $1 to have a new one made. I spent almost an entire summer as Penelope!
