I have been offered a Canon T1i with the standard lens for $500 (CAD). It seems I am at the right place at the right time but I am not 100% sure this is the camera I want but it saves a lot of money and tax. It means I'd be closer to buying an additional lens.

Would you buy it if you were not sure because it is a great deal? on kijiji in Toronto the camera is going for $500+

The original owner bought a higher end camera and this one has not been used much at all (according to him).

A brand new Canon T2i is 750 CDN at amazon.ca
A brand new Canon T3i is 850 CDN at amazon.ca

So you're getting a decent discount if you could trust that the original owner treated it well.

The saying that goes around the boards here is the most expensive lens (ok, in this case camera) is the one you buy twice. If you aren't 100% sold the T1i is the camera you want then hold off.

Looking at ebay, a used Canon T1i seems to be going for about $460 US (which is 467 CDN based on current exchange rates). This isn't an end all be all deal, so I would hold off.

It's not a stellar deal. Yes, it will save you a few bucks, mostly on tax. But if you're not sure it's the camera you really want then I wouldn't jump on it. You'll probably end up second guessing the purchase for a long time to come if you're not sure.

I'd wait and see what sort of deals are around over Thanksgiving for the T2i or T3i. I don't remember if the T1i has the expanded ISO that these other models have, but if it doesn't, I'd wait for a deal that is sure to come on one of these.

I can't take advantage of Thanksgiving deals being in Canada but Christmas is coming and sales will start.

I did use the camera for a week and while I like it, obviously I am not jumping on it or I would not be posting here. It is well cared for based on the use I've had this past week.

I was really thinking of buying one next year and he told me he had this camera just sitting doing nothing. I will continue to wait until I'm sure. Maybe he will still have it when I am ready.

Thanks for confirming what I guess I already knew.

There is really nothing wrong with the T1i. It's a fine camera. I can't speak to that price, but if the seller were to drop the price a bit it might worth it.

My only issue with the cameras at the Rebel end of Canon's line is the physical size. I find them to be too small for my likes. Even the XXD Series is too small without the addition of a battery grip (which I have added to all my cameras.)

Thank you Grumpy. I am going to borrow a Nikon D200 from DS and maybe that will help with the decision making.
