Thinking about buying soon, and for some reason my brain has difficulty wrapping itself around the Use Year concept! We usually go to WDW in Nov. or Spring Break (which is sometimes April but last year was the end of March). Just wondering what the best Use Year would be for us? For some reason the guide on the phone said Use Year is irrelevant and doesn't really matter. That's not my take and was bothersome to me that he said that. So, what would be the best Use Year for us?

Thanks,

October would be a good use year for you. That way you will have until May 31st to bank your points.

Good luck!

Our use yr. is Dec. and it just basically tells me...every Dec. I get my pts. So I'm with the guides, use yr. does not matter...your pts. come in Dec, Feb, etc, whenever...does it matter? You get your pts. and can use them, bank, or borrow them. For some folks the banking deadline is important so maybe that is why some folks want a specific date.:confused3

We plan our vacation from 1-2 yrs. in advance, maybe that's why it does not matter to us.

Actually since you travel in both November and March/April picking a use year is somewhat difficult based on the banking deadlines. The October Use Year (as mentioned above) is good for March/April travel, but lousy for November. A June Use Year would be good for November travel, but not so good for March/April. There just isn't a "safe" use year for your travel plans.

But besides directing you to the following discussion (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1972055) I will somewhat repeat what I wrote before. It seems to me that the more fixed to a specific time of year your travel plans are, the more you will care about use year. So you will hear responses from people who do not care at all because they can travel whenever they like (or by chance got a use year that works for them), and you will hear responses from people who find it incredibly important because they have a limited travel schedule. The problem is that not only do travel cycles change over 50 years, but DVC has changed the banking rules in just the last few years and could do so again in the next 50.

Therefore, since there just isn't a "best" or "safe" use year for your travel plans (as of today), I would not get too caught up in it. And you may want to give your guide some slack. He probably realized what I just told you and therefore said it was "unimportant" since he cannot offer you a "best" use year.

I don't see why an October UY is lousy for November. Please explain.

Okay, egg on my face! This is what I get for talking about use years before coffee!

I had it reversed; the month after traveling (in this case December) is a bad choice for use year, not the month before traveling.

So sorry for the confusion and thank you for the clarification of my error!

O.K. I have a question: how important will UY play at the upcoming VGC? With only 50 units will that the UY have a bigger play for booking a room?

Another question: I have a June UY. Would I have a tough time booking a room in Oct of the same year's points (ex 2009 points in June, booking a room in Oct 2009)? DVC in at WDW? at VGC?

Still working through the finer points of DVC ownership.
