Well after seeing it would be nearly $4600 to stay at Wilderness lodge the week before xmas I'm now thinking DVC would be better for us. I mean I can pretty much get the same room with DVC studio being better than a regular room for 90 to 100 points and I just have to shift my dates like 1 day.

Actually the $4600 was free dining too but a regular room with the discount was still $2500.

Is 90 to 100 points worth $2500, I thought more like it's spending a $1000. I'm starting to run the numbers again and DVC sure seems cheaper if used correctly.

If you buy through Disney, 100 points will be at least $10,000.

Sorry, let me clarify.

I meant what is 100 points worth (about $10 each time you book a stay?) so I'm comparing the costs of points vs actual room rate, of course this must be done over time but...

I realize to buy 100 points initial lay out is about $10,000 depending on where you buy.

I was making a comparison between what pts are worth vs room rates.

$10 is about the going rate for renting points, so many people "value" them that way when considering whether to pay cash or use points for something - like a cruise. But what your own points' value is is widely varying - what did you pay, did you finance, etc. But I understand where you're coming from.

However, I wouldn't count on buying DVC now and being able to get any reservation for this December 2010, esp. at VWL. VWL is really popular in December and it's only 4 months away now. I think you would be unlikely to get a DVC room at VWL at this point. Maybe you would stand a better chance since you're talking about the week before Christmas vs. either early December or Christmas week, but I still think it's a long shot.

I use to be a member years ago. I'm having a hard time still justifying the costs when
there are deals like free dining available.

That said, we have been going during high time (xmas, easter) so I'm thinking it may be good for us again because usually there are no deals then.

Like the dining plan, DVC isn't the cheapest way to vacation, but you can work the system to get the most vacation bang for your buck. For us, it has meant an upgrade from values or mods to deluxe or more frequent cruises. It has been a great deal for us.

You might get a miracle at WLV if you make the direct buy contingent upon you getting your dates for the holiday. We got in at AKV when supposedly it was booked solid, but MS with the Guide on the phone was able to get us a 1BR savannah view at Kidani (I didn't push our luck and ask for Concierge ). We had booked a trip for our dates, but instead decided to use the money to buy into DVC, contingent upon our dates of course.
