Use of the overhead compartment

HOw many items/bags do you/your family put in an airplane overhead?

  • I never use the overhead compartments

  • One bag for the family in the overhead

  • Each of us will store one item in the overhead

  • United moving company would be impressed as to how much I can bring aboard and stow up there ; )

I've only used the overhead once. I had a backpack for my camera equipment, and a laptop bag for my exceptionally large laptop. I think the backpack went in the overhead. Now I have a netbook, so it's a nonissue. I'm back to only carrying a backpack on (and checking my luggage, because I fly SW).

We don't use the overhead bins, but we do use the space under the seat ahead of us. We used to put one bag up there with all the toiletries and such in it, but since the rules about fluids in bags have changed, we just pack the stuff in the suitcases now and bypass the overhead bins.

Never used the overhead.
I'm always amazed at the size of the bags some folks try to cram in those bins. Last flight we took, some guy was actually hammering on the bag with his fists in a desperate (but unsuccessful) effort to get it to fit.

One time I was on a plane and a guy came on with a rollaboard that would not fit. The FA told him to take it to the back where there was more room. He didn't want to do that, he just kept slamming the overhead door. It finally shut. He thought he was so smart. When we landed, he got up to get his bag out, the door would not open! I didn't hang around to see what happened, but I would have been ticked if my bag was in that section.

We use the overhead bin for my bag of medical supplies. It's stuff that is necessary for us to have on board but won't use during the flight (nebulizer, neb meds, daily meds, etc)

I also have a bag that goes under my seat that includes my DS, ipod, snacks, a book, necessary meds for the flight (benedryl, tylenol, epipens, inhalers), my purse and a blanket.

I don't understand why people carry so much stuff on board. If I could get away with just my one bag for under my seat I would love it but I have no choice. I think the amount of stuff that some people bring is absolutely ridiculous.

I have to use the overhead because under our seats are always filled - I would never store my medical equipment overhead so that is always stored under my seat so my purse & camera has to go under husbands seat. Son could not possibly fly without video crap within' hands reach under seat :lmao:

So we usually have one small carry on with 1 days worth of clothes/bathing suits/sandals JUST IN CASE our checked luggage gets lost.

IMO if the airlines would just price the tix's to include 1 checked bag without an additional cost it would eliminate a lot of the excessive carry on's. I don't know why they are lax about people following the rules, they aren't when you go through the security checks.
