USA ranks 3rd behind American Samoa and Kiribati.

How can this be?

http://www.expatify.com/news/the-worlds-top-10-fattest-countries.html

The World Health Organization has recently released the results of health surveys taken between 2000 and 2008 on world obesity, and the news isn’t pretty.

Since obesity rates can be an indicator of a nation’s nutritional trends, health and culture, we thought it might be useful information for the expat to know. Here are the 10 fattest countries of the last decade:

(1) American Samoa, 93.5% (of the population that is overweight)
It’s a staggering number. Many Pacific Island nations have had trouble with weight in modern times mostly because they have abandoned their traditional foods for cheap, easily attained processed foods from the West. Perhaps no other Pacific Island has had such access to these habits as American Samoa.

(2) Kiribati, 81.5%
Like American Samoa, Kiribati has been flooded with processed foods like Spam and mutton flaps (fatty sheep scraps), often sold at lower prices than native food.

(3) U.S.A., 66.7%
Well, the U.S.A. doesn’t top the list, but it’s close, and it falls behind only a small islands nation and one of its own unincorporated territories. The United States of Processed food, high fructose corn syrup and fast food has been high on this list over the last half century.

(4) Germany, 66.5%
The fattest country in Europe no doubt owes their portly woes to lots of beer, fatty foods and inactivity.

(5) Egypt, 66%
Obesity among Egyptian women is particularly high, often attributed to cultural taboos on women exercising or playing sports.

(6) Bosnia-Herzegovina, 62.9%
Once considered a problem only in high-income countries, obesity is dramatically on the rise in low- and middle-income countries like Bosnia-Herzegovina, where smoking, drinking and eating unhealthy foods spiked during the war that ravaged the country from 1992 to 1995.

(7) New Zealand, 62.7%
Obesity is a growing concern for New Zealand. While its native Maori have struggled with weight due to loss of traditional culture like other Pacific Islanders– they are mostly just a scapegoat. New Zealand’s entire population is getting fatter at a rapidly increased rate.

(8) Israel, 61.9%
In the past 30 years, the number of obese Israelis has tripled, evidence the country is truly part of the Western world.

(9) Croatia, 61.4%
Croatia, where cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death, is also a victim of the globalization of the food market, which tends to suppress traditional diets as cheaper processed foods from the U.S. and Europe flood store shelves.

(10) United Kingdom, 61%
A recent survey ranked Brits among the bottom third of European nations in physical exercise, leading Health Secretary Andy Burnham to comment, “We’re really in danger of being known as the best in the world for watching sport, but one of the worst for getting out there and doing it for ourselves.”

And this surprises anyone?:confused3

Not anyone who has been paying attention. I would wager if we only looked at people under 18 we would be #1.

I am surprised to see New Zealand on the list.

How can it be? A crappy diet full of processed foods and devoid of fresh fruit and vegetables combined with a lack of meaningful physical activity. Add then into the mix that portion sizes are out of control and there are times even when you are eating something that would be good for your health you are consuming 3 or 4 servings as opposed to 1. Unfortunately I don't really see a lot of people doing anything to correct the trend either, at least not in the main stream.

The current mentality in the country about the issue isn't helping. Mention this problem and on many occasions you are just "fat bashing".

Um...remember on the Dis it's not fat or obese, it's "Pooh Sized", you know, because that makes a difference.

How can this be?

Are you really surprised by this?

The obesity rates are soaring in this country.
Frankly, I'm more shocked that we are only 3rd - I expected higher.

I'm surprised that the US in not ranked first. It's really sad to see so many fat children and to see some of the junk food that is fed to them by their parents.

I believe it.

We were in Carabbas the other night, I don't usually lie places like that but we were traveling and it's where we ended up.

I usually share an entree with my daughter. The chicken dish I ordered was big I was shocked I would describe as it being served on a platter rather than a plate. I ate, she ate and we had plenty to take home. There was no need for that much food. Anyone that belongs to the clean plate club would be consuming enough for at least 3 people.

I looked around the dining room and I would say that there were at least a dozen tables with overly obese people.

My DD went to public school for one year. I hated what they served the kids and what was available to them to eat. Our school board has voted down making it more healthy because that costs more money. I refused to let her eat the school lunches or breakfasts.

I cook fresh most nights it's so much more expensive than just buying a frozen meal or going to a drive through. Fast food is filling and cheap and easy.

We are set up to fail because of how we are socialized in this country.

You took the words right out of my mouth. This is the only message board I belong to, so I don't have a lot to compare it with, but the attitudes about obesity/overweight issues here definitely seem complacent to me. One poster on a recent thread said she was overweight, hated how she looked, and said she won't be truly happy with herself until she lost weight. People jumped all over her for not being happy with her excess fat. If you show any kind of negativity towards fat here, you're shallow etc. etc. I hope its not representative of how the rest of overweight Americans feel, because it will only get worse if we don't do something about it. Usually, an overweight kid is accompanied by an overweight parent. That's a worrisome trend.

So at this rate of growth, what is the next size after pooh? I think we need a new category.

May I suggest, "Ursula-sized"?

It is because too many people lose sight of the long view. Yes, you can be overweight and have healthy numbers (blood pressure, LDL, HDL, ect) in the short term but over time the stress of excess weight will cause health issues down the road. The things you do in your 20's and 30's effect your health in your 50's and 60's.

I also love the little chestnut that going by BMI athletes are all overweight so it isn't really a problem. BMI is far from perfect and is merely one tool for assessing health. It's biggest problem is that it takes only weight into account as opposed to weight and body composition. A trained athlete will have a higher % of muscle and could come up on the BMI scale as obese or overweight because of it. Most of the people on that list aren't on there because they have too much lean muscle. If your BMI tells you that you are overweight but you have 8% body fat you are not the same as someone with 25% or 35% body fat.

I'm sure it is only a matter of time before we are all scolded here.
