What an absolute crock of *&%! from a so-called quality newspaper. Not only are they (yet again) 100% wrong, they even manage to be a week behind a story in The Times!!! Their daily newspaper actually carried this story on May 15, by David Charter, pointing out the US was
considering bringing in AETA (Advanced Electronic Travel Authorisation), as already used by Australia, for all incoming arrivals.
We then debated it on this thread:

The intro is so far off the mark it would be laughable if it wasn't so serious. It says people will be forced to apply for visas, but then nowhere in the rest of the story does it mention visas again, let alone why AETA would require people to get visas. It even points out Spain wants to introduce these measures too, yet, for some reason, the US is introducing "draconian" plans. It is complete and utter garbage, with an anti-American bias that we've come to expect from the broadsheets.
The sad thing is, thousands of people will see this pile of drivel and believe it. No-one is trying to make everyone apply for a visa. It is just not true, and even if the US passes this ruling, it will not actually affect the travel procedure in any way. What a joke.
It just makes you weep for the standards of journalism these days. If Chris Haslam ever passed O-Level English (as in, understanding the language), the Dept of Ed needs to take a close look at its standards.
