???US to Costa Rica on SW

I travel with my medication in small ziplock bags in my purse, is this ok for fights out of the country?? Or should I put it in labeled medication bottles. I am referring to things like medication prescribed and Tylenol Motrin so over-the-counter as well.

Best bet if you don't want it pitched is to keep it in the original labeled packaging. You should have meds in the labeled prescription bottle for all prescriptions. This applies to departures and returns.

The above poster is incorrect. TSA isn't interested in your prescription meds and isn't going to throw them away. You can bring the prescription bottles, but it is unnecessary.

I think the question is about customs in Costa Rica, not TSA here. I know some countries really want the meds in labeled bottles, but I don't remember what we did for Costa Rica. I would at least take the prescriptions in labeled bottles, just in case. I doubt customs would even notice one way or the other though.

Medications in pill or other solid form must undergo security screening. It is recommended that medication be clearly labeled to facilitate the screening process. Check with state laws regarding prescription medication labels.​

I've gone through intense security screening coming home from Central America and the Caribbean... particularly on flights inbound to the U.S. when there is a security alert. For example, I was flying home on Southwest in 2011 on the day they happened to bust a drug smuggling ring using the flight route from Jamaica to Ft. Lauderdale (my connection). While this is unlikely to happen to you, for me I would rather take the precaution. Maybe I'm just over-precautions though! Coming home from Costa Rica I'm pretty sure they screened my bags on exit, can't remember about entry.

i always take pains to shove everything in the alloted TSA quart baggie.

last trip in march on allegiant thru Sanford was informed by TSA person that medications don't count towards your 'baggie' allowance and it's ok to pile them all into a big gallon bag and leave them in carryon.

which is exactly how i had my things tossed in carryon by mistake ergo the exchange.

no idea if this is actual policy or not

i would toe the line as to international travel though. Keep meds in Rx bottles, always good to carry a copy of Rx with you jik too.

Thanks for your tips, yes this is in regard to international travel. I will travel with meds in there original RX bottle. I will transfer them into individual ziplock bags upon arrival. I am reffering to the very small 2 inch jewelry ziplock bags. One Med is injectionable, talked to CVS pharmacist and his thought is that it should be fine with the prescription label from the box of the Med. I have never had an issue with US travel and these meds.
