US Sleeping in?/ Best Drop off place

I am planning a trip during the week from Christmas to New Years and I noticed yesterday that the opening time changed from 8 am to 9 am. Any in ideas as to why?

Also I want to activate my season pass the evening before we plan to visit. Where is the best place to be dropped off to do that? I know there is a hike from the parking deck.

We are not staying on site...as much as I would love to....

The time may change back to 8:00 but even if it doesn't, it's a sure bet that the parks will open before 9:00 AM even if the official opening is still listed as 9:00 AM.

There is a guest drop off area. You will need to follow the signs as there are many different entrances onto Universal Studios property. The sign says something like : "guest drop off/pick up, buses, taxis." It is almost across the street from the valet parking. It drops you by the escalators near wheelchair rentals and the restrooms--that large area where the credit car people try to get you to sign up. It is almost as close as valet parking and much closer than regular parking.
