Hi!

I've been a long time lurker on the boards but decided it's time to get into the action and post about a recent trip to Universal!

I'm JacksDadCan (I'm just jacksdad on another board but it was taken here, so added "can" for Canada, eh) and I'm normally full time dad to Jack, partner to Kate (KB), and am self employed.

Unfortunately this trip didn't involve him or KB but my BIL Adam, and here's the back story: My grandparents normally winter in Florida and normally my parents drive down a vehicle for them then fly back.

Well wouldn't you know it, but they got a vehicle down after Christmas but no one seemed too interested in going down and getting it... so a plan was hatched.

Sort of.

Around mid January it was offered that I figure out a trip to Orlando for my family but a few complications got in the way. As I was explaining this situation to Adam he offhandedly commented "you know we could make it a bro cruise" and the idea was hatched.

Of course, I wasn't sure if he was serious or not since he's never even been to Florida and had refused going up until this trip. But we started talking, planning, and before I knew it we had flights booked.

Luckily, our home airport had direct flights to Orlando every Friday evening so we were able to get down relatively easily. Since it's not an overly busy airport check in was a breeze and we were good to go! Flight was uneventful and before long this was on screen:

Ok, not a great pic but it zoomed into the Orlando area vs. the whole eastern seaboard... we were nearly there!

After the plane landed we were escorted through to a fonorail (fakeorail? fauxrail?) and taken through customs. This was a first for me and a new entry into the airport. Eventually we made it to the main concourse and headed to the parking garage... there was a car waiting for us to eventually drive home!

We drove straight to our hotel for the weekend, the Best Western Orlando Gateway, which turned out to be a Universal Studios partner hotel (I knew it had complimentary shuttle service, but kind of makes you feel better about a hotel choice?). I never took a pic of the hotel, but it looked like this:

We got ourselves situated in our room and by this time it was after 9pm, so we just went to the local IHOP (first and last). We just chilled and went to bed after that, we had a 815 shuttle to catch!

The next morning I woke and went to confirm seats on the shuttle (note, do this ASAP as Sunday's 815 shuttle was booked and had to wait til 915), and we were off to Universal Studios.

I did run into a small issue with our pre-purchased tickets but it 100% could have been my fault. Purchased through expedia and they said to go to will call for self-scanners, but for the life of me I could not get the bar code to work so we had to stand in line at "Voucher". Nevertheless they had us sorted out for our 2-day base in no time and we were into the park!

Our first stop was Rip Ride! (I don't want to brag, but the park wasn't busy this weekend. The longest we waited for a ride was *I believe* Kong, and that was 35 minutes from the time we entered the line to exited the building. About the same for Gringot, maybe less). This was about a 5 minute wait (mid staircase). Awesome! Adam likes coasters and I don't mind them either, so what a great start to the whole experience.

Next, we hit up Transformers (walk on) Starbucks (priorities) and wandered over to Mummy. (This was my favourite last year, but isn't anymore....stay tuned). While we drank coffee Marilyn put on a street show. *Whistle* (but no photo).

After we exited Mummy we decided to wander over to HP (I think we did the park mostly clockwise so this would make sense). Cause Adam wanted to see this guy:

We poked around the shops for a few minutes and got in line for Gringots. This (and Kong, as mentioned) we by far the longest lines we stood in all weekend. After having basically walk ons so far we sucked it up, and again it wasn't too long before we were through the ride. We continued through HP and did a bit more shopping, Adam bought a onesie for his upcoming child and we continued on.

As you might have guessed, our next stop was MIB. Now, I love this movies and the ride is pretty fun, but it was nice to get into the AC for a few minutes as well. I think we scored okay (I admit... Adam got me by a few points) but weren't better than average. Guess I won't join MIB this year.

Next up was Simpsons Ride, and last year I loved this ride. This year, it actually made both Adam and I feel kind of off. Maybe it was because it was close to lunch, maybe something else, but it really didn't do it for me. Having said that, I'll do it again next time.

However... Simpsons area had been on my mind since last year, and it was all because of this (what turned out to be) delicious, delicious deliciousness.... The Clogger!! And perfect timing, it was lunch time.

Ohmygosh, I still think about this burger. Last year on our trip we ate at Leaky Cauldron, which was nice, but I totally messed up and should have waited to get one of these. So I wasn't making that mistake twice! When they're putting it together you're like... meh? but from the first bite to the last... mama mia! Anyway, now all I can think about it how hungry I am, so I'll carry on....

After that feast we hit up E.T., which was more for nostalgia than any kind of good ride, but *surprise* another walk on, so nearly worth it!

Leaving E.T. I *think* we headed over and caught Fear Factory Live, but we might have ridden Transformers on the way. Anyway, we did catch the show and it was pretty entertaining!

By this time we were actually more or less done but our shuttle back wasn't until 415ish. I know we caught the Terminator show and I'm pretty sure we did Mummy again, popped our heads into a few shops and were on our way... after we downed a couple of these of course:

Up next, Day 2 at Islands Of Adventure!!

Day 1 Continued…

Now, I admit I do really like Universal, but being so close to Disney I mean, you just have to get a taste, no matter how small.

After we got back to the room we watched some tv, but it was still early in the night and there were other things I wanted to do. Adam ended up having a nap and had no interest in heading to Disney Springs, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me.

Last year most of the Springs was under construction so I couldn’t get a great appreciation for the new area, but this year was much different, and what a great transformation! I don’t think I’ve ever visited at night either so that was cool.

It’s a long tradition/running joke that our family loves the Mickey ice cream bars, so my sights were on finding one of those in a hurry. Easily parked the vehicle and within a few minutes had one of these:

Good (great?) bar and trust me, I could have eaten a few more without issue. I wandered around Springs for an hour or so, stuck my head in a couple shops and headed back to the hotel for the night. We had another day of Universal ahead!

The next morning we woke and headed towards IOA. As mentioned I wasn’t quite organized and the 815 shuttle was full, however we were at IOA before 10 so it wasn’t all bad. I’m more of a first thing kind of guy so this annoyed me slightly, but we had all day in another not-so-busy park.

Oh look, there’s Adam.

Now, I had known about the Croissant Moon Bakery as a great option to Starbucks and knew that’s where we were headed first. And it didn’t disappoint! Coffee was very good and price-wise I would compare their size to a grande from SB but for about the price of a tall. Also, I had seen pics of their delicious muffin selection and decided on the pistachio nut muffin. So good, so dense!

It seems we had a method of travel because again we basically traversed the park in a clockwise direction. Which meant our first stop of the day was HULK.

(Sorry bad pic).

Again, we enjoyed minimal wait (although IOA felt much busier than yesterday’s US) and we were off to see our good buddy Spider-Man. We stood in line a few minutes for this ride, but definitely under 10 minutes. I was REALLY SURPRISED with this ride, and would say it’s probably my favourite 4D ride at either park. A great, great ride. I believe we rode this 2 more times today (including one walk-on).

(Looking at the map we had skipped Fearfall, but we got there later. This was a ZERO PERSON WAIT. Incredible!)

After Spidey we headed through Toon Lagoon. Ripsaw Falls was down for refurb and it was still a bit early for Barges so we continued onward towards Kong.

What a cool ride and eye for detail! Now, the first time we rode the truck didn’t do the outside drive part, but the second time it did which leads you through the main Kong gates. I wonder how they decide? Both times the weather was spotless. Maybe the size of the wait line? I digress.

Continuing on, we walked through Jurassic Park and into HP and had a longer visit. What a cool world! I definitely think it’s better than Diagon with more to see and do. We went to Forbidden Journey (which I would argue is my favourite ride) and then did both sides of Dragon Challenge.

It must have been a slow day because the first time the Express guy offered to let us go through if we could think of the kinds of dragons in HP. Of course, we couldn’t think of “Horntail” but he said if we found out (which we did) we could use Express the next time. Of course, they rotated while we were riding but it didn’t matter, both times we were quickly boarded.

We explored this area quite a bit (Adam grabbed some butter beer) and we continued past to the Lost Continent and grabbed lunch at Fire Eater’s Grill.

Now, I got the gyro combo which was okay for a gyro, but I definitely enjoyed the dessert! You’re offered a couple choices and I decided on the chocolate chip brownie bar and thought it was fantastic! We considered Mythos but ended up just grabbing food when we saw the Fire Eater sign.

With fuller stomachs, we headed back into HP and rode Forbidden Journey again. This time we opted to try single rider and were in and out in no time. I had a chuckle though because I rode with a family of three and the kid didn’t sit with this parents but on the far side, so the ride pic has me between them lol. Not sure if that one made their purchases that day. Oh well.

After doing all the exploring in HP we wandered back to Jurassic Park and I was able to convince Adam to ride River Adventure. We sat second row but thankfully didn’t get too wet (mostly wet face and clothes dried quickly anyway). We poked around the Discovery Center and continued back towards Superhero Island.

Here, we rode Fearfall (zero person line) and rode Spider Man and HULK again. Afterwards, we doubled back to Kong and rode it a second time (longest wait of the weekend).

At this time, we pretty much had seen everything we wanted to see so we headed towards the exit. I grabbed a couple souvenirs and we were soon back to our hotel.

This Sunday was Super Bowl and we couldn’t quite decide what we wanted to do. Eventually we sat at TGIF for dinner and then returned to our hotel and finished watching the game there. I took a quick trip to Publix and grabbed some snacks for our drive and more or less fell asleep after the game. Monday morning we were driving!

I woke around 430 and wanted to get going. We planned to head out around 5 anyway so this worked fine. Actually, we literally pulled out of the parking lot at 5:01 so this was great timing.. we had this ahead of us:

We chose the I75 route so simplicity and we were off, car pointed north and driving.

As you might be able to tell from the title, we did this drive in one shot! Luckily we did not run into any driving issues and made the most of our stops (gas, coffee, food all in one). I drove the first 12ish hours and Adam drove the rest.

Now, we didn’t necessarily think we were going to do this drive in one go, but we just kept going and the GPS kept saying it was less and less time til our destination. So onward we went. When it got to under 4 hours left we decided to just keep driving and the decision was made - unless we had issues we were going to pull this drive off in one day!

We ended up pulling off the highway at our exit at 12:07am and dropped Adam off at his house. We don’t live too far apart and I was pulling into my driveway at 12:21, 19 hours and 20 minutes after leaving Orlando.

Now that was a long haul back home!

No way could I do that long of a drive

I live in Georgia and on my drive back this month, got a room after driving 3 hours

Call me a wimp
Lol

Enjoyed the pictures and your report a lot!

Such a fun read

Do have to agree that Dr Doom is a great ride
Wonderful it was a walk on the second time you stopped by it

The road just kept going, we just kept driving!

I think we just plain missed it the first time by, I doubt it was busy at any point. The universal app was great for showing wait times, but as I've mentioned a bunch we really didn't have wait times to deal with. I remember mentioning that I couldn't imagine walking through all the turnstiles we passed just to get on the rides. We got spoiled for sure!

you went at a good time with lower crowds.

first pics i saw here park looked empty.

then you showed a pic of potterville and well.......that section always has peeps in it...

(I should have explained) my family (Kate, Jackers, sisters, parents, one BIL) did 6 days in Orlando, however the dollar exchange (1.4!!) was so bad that we only did one park, one day. Us kids (my sisters, Kate, BIL) decided we would do US and my parents took Jack to Magic Kingdom that day. That was my first experience at a park in Florida outside the Disney experience. So it was definitely nice to get back and see IOA and more of US again!

This year, the start of February was definitely a quiet time. I checked crowd calendars before we left to get a general idea but I would always consider travelling south to Orlando in February based on previous crowd experiences... plus it's my birthday month!

Yes, Hogsmeade was the busiest part of either park but the wait times for the rides was probably shorter than Ollivanders.... ;)

All in all I'm already planning a longer trip next February with the family. Can't wait!

Wow! Wish our exchange rate would go up as high as 1.4 again! Sounds like luxury to what we are getting now!

Enjoying reading your report so far.......that is a drive and a half though.......one day we'd love to drive from East coast USA all the way over to the West coast, but take our time.......you did well.......

Nice pictures, and glad you enjoyed the pistachio muffin and Fireaters.........both good!

Glad you had such a nice time and had relatively quiet crowds.....can make a difference, and so good to hear you plan to go back for longer........:)

Already thinking about next year's food, so that trip can't come soon enough!

I think February is the perfect time to travel: low crowds, mid-Canadian winter, usually hotel deals. I think I'll do 3-4 nights at Disney and do IOA again. Might try DVC. Jack loves super heros and I think he'd have a blast! Of course, I'm also good with flying instead of driving again ;)
