US Air Standby

Hi everyone,

I have a couple of questions about attempting standby. We are flying out of PIT at 6:15PM on Thanksgiving Day. I chose that time because it was the cheapest. But I was thinking of trying to get on an earlier flight that day by waiting standby. Do you think we have a chance? How busy are the airports Thanksgiving morning and afternoon?

Also, I know that there is a $25 charge for standby. Can I use my credit vouchers to pay that charge?

Thanks and have a magical day! :earboy2:

We flew out of Philly a few years ago on Thanksgiving Day. Airport was very light. The US Air rep told us that the day before is extremely heavy and that Thanksgiving Day is usually light. You may have a good chance at standby.

The day before is the busiest travel day of the year, Thanksgiving itself is much lighter BUT many airlines are no longer allowing standby for people who wish to leave on an earlier flight (something I have done a lot when I traveled for work). Some will charge you the difference in price between tickets. CAll your airline and find out their policy.

USAirways will allow you to fly standby. There is a charge of $25. I would suggest posting your question on www.flyertalk.com , go to miles and points, then the USAirways forum.

Things may be a little different now that they merged with America West.

Thanks for the responses. I called USAir today and found out that they still offer standby. So I can call a few hours ahead of the flight to see what our chances are of getting on the flight. They won't accept the credit vouchers for the $25 fee. I also learned that ...

US Air won't issue credit vouchers anymore for a change in airfare after it is purchased. I guess this new policy came about with the merger. I'm bummed. I used to count on that refund and book early.
